I just got back from Clearwater. It was the best one ever.

Problem is, I walked around in my Mudcat t-shirt in the hope of finding (or being found by) some of my fellow 'catters, but no such luck. I did not see one single Mudcat t-shirt in the whole crowd... and I was there from the moment it opened at 10am to the moment it closed at 830pm.

Oh well, I'll just have to find some other way to meet you guys. (Wanna come to the NYC shanty sing on June 26th?)

Matthew: Were you lucky again? Did you get to sing with Pete?. I guess you missed the several Mudcatters who were there, T-shirts and all. Sure are sorry we couldn't be there, but I had promised to perform a wedding service for some friends of friends (I'm a Justice of the Peace, not a preacher!). Can you break out on another weekend and get up to Altamont for the Old Songs Festival? There'll be a number of Mudcat faithfuls there, including the parents of the Digital Tradition: Susan of the DT and Dick Greenhaus. Look for a Mudcat T-shirt with a banjo permanently attached to the front. That'll be Dick. Susan will be nearby, waiting for someone to sing a great Child Ballad. Can't miss 'em!

Sandy

Matthew,

As I posted in the *other* Clearwater thread, Duane D. & I were there, doing the same thing you were! Rob Paton told us that Easy Riader had dropped by the stand, but that was all we saw of heard of Mudcatters. We *may* have recruited a new one, though! It was a great day!

Sandy, I sure did get lucky at Clearwater, but not in the form of singing with Pete. There was a moment when I might have been able to, but I was far too busy enjoying singing sea shanties with the great Jan Christiensen to consider running off.

One reason I guess I didn't meet any 'Catters was because I spent most of Clearwater persuing my other great pastime: dancing. This was the first year they put a canopy over the dance stage (a la Falcon Ridge, another favorite event of mine), so I could dance for hours on end without frying in the sun. My wife and I had a good laugh during some of the contra dancing when some woman very flagrantly threw herself at me in an innocent but wildly obvious flirtation that lasted over an hour. What an ego trip!

The only big concert I actualy sat still for was Arlo Gutherie's, and boy was that great! As always, he was a masterful storyteller and had us all in the palms of his hands. He mentioned the time he went to meet with the Postmaster General for the ceremony of the inauguration of the Woodie Gutherie stamp. He reflected, "Now mind you, I wasn't surprised to be seein' my father's picture in a post office; I just didn't expect to be seein' it like that -- and worth 32 cents to boot!"

But the greatest difference for this year's clearwater was the location. It was perfect!! Right by the water on our beloved Hudson, and sprawling with space, lots of shade, and a layout that made it easy to find everything. I pray that every future Clearwater festival forever will be right there.

Now, tell me more about Altamont...

One other thing I failed to mention about Clearwater was the fact that I had a special guest with me. There's a mother-daughters singing group called The WindLasses, consiting of Donna Glover and her daughters, Daphne and Stephanie. Originally from Roseville, Ohio, they just made their performance debut at this years' Mystic Festival, where they were an instant success and their album sold out. I have been privileged to have been a part of their lives for about a year now, and I love them all. They sing beautifully, and they write their own material.

Anyway, the older daughter, Daphne Glover, just moved to New York City, moving in with another person I adore - Alison Kelley, of the groups NexTradition, New York Packet and Johnson Girls. Daphne moved in on Friday, and I took her with me to Clearwater the next day. We were there from 10am to 830pm, but I doubt that I got more than ten minutes with her, because she was instantly descended upon by her many admirers, chiefly the other NYC folkies who are so glad to have her here. So, Daphne was off on her own, networking, setting up deals, and getting advice (especially from David Kleiman, the well-loved member of the group Watersign). I suspect that you'll all be hearing more from Daphne in the future.

Matthew: Sounds as though you had a great weekend, despite missing all the Mudcatters. Now check out the Old Songs thread, where Jeri has included a "blue clicky thing" to lead you to their web site. More traditional music than Falcon Ridge (which takes place only about 25 miles from where we live), dancing is almost continuous at Old Songs, too. Site is a fair ground, but the main stage is in a pleasant, shaded spot and workshops take place in a variety of protected locations (old Dutch Barn, a large sheep barn (appropriate for the great gospel sings), etc. Food options are excellent, booths offera fine array of crafts, and there'll be a pile of Mudcats enjoying it all.
