Subject: French lessons From: Margo Date: 17 Jun 99 - 03:03 PM Kat has asked for lessons in foreign languages, just simple phrases. I volunteer to try. This phrase is what my grandmother would say when I showed her a new dress: "Ah! Comme c'est jolie!" which means Ah, how it is pretty. Pronunciation: Ah, come say joe-lee. Ah is the same as we say it in English. Comme (how) is just like come in English. C'est (it is) is like "say" but without the diphthong. A diphthong is when you blend two sounds together. The word say starts with an open a sound and finishes with a closed e sound. to pronounce "c'est" you will start with the open a and stop! (Is this clear as mud?) Jolie (pretty) is like joe-lee, but the j is soft like the g in beige. I can't think of an English word that starts with that sound. And the accent is on the second syllable. I will determine by your feedback whether or not to enter more phrases. Margarita |
