Subject: Disappearing messages From: Richard Bridge Date: 23 May 99 - 03:39 AM Has anyone else been having trouble with hitting a key while composing a message and seeing the whole thing disappear without sending? It's very frustrating when you've just thought out a half-hour dissertation for a BS thread! It seems to happen mostly (but not always) when I'm correcting what I have typed before moving on to to new train of thought or sending, and often when I want to change the case of a letter I typed. Am I hitting shift and delete (or backspace) at the same time? Is it a mudcat phenom - I've never had it happen while working in Word - or is it something on my system. |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Alan of Australia Date: 23 May 99 - 05:32 AM G'day, I'm pretty sure this happened to Alison. I think she re-read what she'd typed, hit 'Delete' to edit a typo & lost the lot. I've always had the habit of typing long posts into Notepad, then pasting in here.
Cheers, |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Jeri Date: 23 May 99 - 09:23 AM Do you by any chance have a touchpad? I have the same problem with my laptop. I accidentally highlight something with a stray finger or other body part, and the next thing I type wipes it out. |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Banjer Date: 23 May 99 - 09:30 AM "a stray finger or other body part"? Would it be rude to ask where your keyboard is when you are typing? Could one of these "other body parts" possibly be a toe? Or even worse, how high is the table or desk and how close do you sit to it. There is an answwer to all these mysteries I'm sure....It may also possibly have a direct bearing on what one is or is not wearing whilst typing!? Mama was right, I cain't behave myself for even five minutes..... |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 23 May 99 - 10:05 AM I too use a touchpad and after a few days of things like this happening, I went into the control panel and disabled the tapping option. I just use the pad for pointing and the buttons for commands. Now if I could just stop accidentally clicking on the CLEAR ENTRIES box on my way to the SUBMIT MESSAGE box and absent-mindedly hitting the back button instead of the SUBMIT--and if whoever it is who sometimes erases my messages after I post them and they appear on the threads list, none of you would ever miss another of my priceless contributions to this forum. --seed |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Jeri Date: 23 May 99 - 12:35 PM Banjer - how silly! A toe??!! I only use my toes to hit the "enter" key when I'm too lazy to pick up the keyboard. I have this setup with my desktop on a trunk by a recliner. (I get way too comfy.) The laptop gets used this way whenever my video card goes "poof." Let's just say that I can prevent keyboard mishaps by the judicious use of safety gear. Manufacturers include Playtex and Maidenform. So what are you wearing? |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Banjer Date: 23 May 99 - 02:14 PM As little as I have to! reminds me of the conversation between two folks. Man tells woman he can't go to sleep unless he has either a TV or Radio on. She informs him that when she goes to bed she wants nothing on! I can see where in a recliner with a key board could be a problem for some folks...nuff sed...oh give me strength!!! |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: alison Date: 23 May 99 - 10:22 PM Hi, Yes I've had that problem, (things disappearing) over thelast while using a regular keyboard...... usually when you go back to fix up a spelling mistake.... this is a fairly recent thing for me... didn't use to happen.... my advice..... if you're typing something long.... do it in "notepad' or somewhere and copy and paste it in, or copy it in the message box, before you fix the spelling. slainte alison |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Jeri Date: 24 May 99 - 09:02 AM Good idea Alison. Sometimes I highlight and copy when I want to hit "refresh" to see if anyone else responded before I send my message. Another way to accidentally highlight the whole thing so the next letter you type wipes everything out is to hit "Ctrl" and "A" at the same time. An Banjer, I would have replied but anything I said would've gotten me in deeper. (Like, "no, I had a bathrobe on, and I actually had to lean over the keyboard.") Plus, I had this picture in my head of a naked guy in a recliner, and...well, you said it - "nuff said!" |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Oct 09 - 10:33 AM As you can see from the date of the first post of this thread, we've had a problem with disappearing messages for a long, long time. I haven't found the answer to that one yet. Sometimes, I think it's Mudcat, and sometimes it's my browser. If you get an error message after you post; then the problem is definitely Mudcat, and it may be a while before I can post successfully. If that's the case, I paste (see below) my post into a text file on my computer, and save it so I can post later. If I post and it goes to the Forum Menu and the thread I posted to isn't at the top of the list, then the message just didn't "take." It happens often, so I've learned to highlight and copy [CTRL-C] messages that took me a long time to type. Then if it doesn't post, I can try again by pasting [CTRL-V] the text into a message box. But does anybody have an idea what causes my messages to disappear? Is it Mudcat, or is it my browser, or is it something I'm doing wrong? -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Mr Happy Date: 08 Oct 09 - 10:58 AM I wasn't able to refresh the page or post to any thread most of this morning, getting a message to clear my browser. I did this but still no joy until about an hour ago + some posts didn't go. All seems ok now tho' |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Jeri Date: 08 Oct 09 - 11:00 AM I tried to submit a message three times from the 'preview' screen, and it didn't work. Copied and pasted it into the 'Reply to Thread' window and it worked. |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Jos Date: 08 Oct 09 - 11:02 AM If you accidentally wipe out what you just typed, press CTRL + Z and it undoes what you just did, so the wiped out text reappears. |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Jeri Date: 08 Oct 09 - 11:07 AM Mudcat was suffering this morning, and the message to delete stuff to make room in the backup file was about Mudcat's backup file. See From Max: Mudcat Maintenance Sunday (Offline). |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: GUEST Date: 08 Oct 09 - 11:19 AM 'hitting a key while composing a message and seeing the whole thing disappear without sending?' This happens to me sometimes, but it's not a matter of hitting a key. It happens when my hand shakes a little and presses some diabolical combination of buttons on the mouse. Thanks, Jos, for the suggestion of using Ctrl + Z. I will try that next time a message disappears. |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Bill D Date: 08 Oct 09 - 11:41 AM amazing...I thought I knew all the tricks, but ctrl-z had escaped me. But,,,I repeat.... *IF* you actually post and the message doesn't take, try the "back" key, then hit "reload" in your browser, (NOT 'refresh' in Mudcat). This puts a new copy of the forum in the browser's cache, and your posts will now work. |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Oct 09 - 12:09 PM Another thing that can happen: you rest your hand on your "enter" key a bit too long, and you enter a long string of line-feeds (or end-of-paragraph marks, whatever you want to call 'em) and your whole message scrolls up and out of sight. It's still there; you've just got to make it scroll back down, hopefully by removing all those line-feeds. I nearly always compose my messages in Word and then select-all (ctrl-a), copy (ctrl-c), and paste (ctrl-v) into Mudcat's message box. Then I click "preview" and do one last proofread before I click "submit." While viewing the preview, if my message contains any links, I will often click the link to make sure it goes where I want it to go. Of course, then I will have to use my browser's "back" button to get back to the submit page. On a few occasions I have gotten distracted by something on the new web page, and totally forgot to go back and do the submit! But then, I always have my copy in Word to go back to. I think there is a limit to the number of times you can use the preview function. I mean, if you enter a message, preview it, make a correction, preview it again, make another correction, preview it yet again, then hit submit—it doesn't work. |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Bernard Date: 08 Oct 09 - 12:25 PM There have been occasions recently when I've hit 'submit' only to be redirected to an error trap with a load of gobbledegook as to why the Mudcat server objects to my posting! As others have commented, I find it better to use notepad, then copy/paste the 'finished' article... then, on the odd occasion I forget to do this, and a Richard Bridge happens. So frustrating! |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 08 Oct 09 - 01:55 PM Ctrl+z is the same as using "Undo" in Edit. (ie, you can keep pushing it, and each time it goes a step back.) But more convenient, perhaps. |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Aug 10 - 05:37 AM I've noticed a few posts from people who say that their messages have been disappearing. I don't know if it's correct to say that the problem is in your browser or computer, and not with Mudcat. HOWEVER, if you have had a problem with a disappearing post in a thread, you can almost always get the message to "take" if you refresh the thread by clicking on the curly-arrow refresh button on your browser. I think you can also do it by pressing F5 on your keyboard, but I'm not positive that "refresh" works the same way. Oh...and you can usually get your message back by clicking the "back" arrow on your browser until you get to the window where you typed the message. To be safe, I try to [CTRL-A] highlight and [CTRL-C] copy every long message before I submit....but I forget often, and sometimes lose my most profound messages. -Joe- P.S. The remedy was developed by Bill D, and it works! Thanks, Bill. |

Subject: RE: Disappearing messages From: VirginiaTam Date: 27 Aug 10 - 05:55 AM I find that if I go back a screen, (I am using Google Chrome) that my post is still there in the editing box, ready to be posted. At this point I copy it and put it in Notepad, try to submit again. If it still does not take, I close the browser and go back to the thread and try again with the material I copied to Notepad. I did not think about refreshing before closing the browser... Doh! |
