Subject: POSITIVE BS- ALTERNATIVE to STRESS THREADS

While I have found the serious debating around here, lately to be interesting, infuriating, colourful, and sometimes downright maddening, I, for one, am ready for a thread that is about music and "light" stuff. I know there's fun stuff on here, already, but I'd like to see one more along the lines of the Music Therapy one and/or other positive experiences of Mudcateers, daily and otherwise, and esp. in relation to their music.

Between missing Mudders, ailing, but getting better 'Spaw's, and high tempers on some thread, as well as sadness, this will be an attempt at balancing things out.

I'll start by teliing you about this past weekend. bet and I are going to perform for the second annual Way. Culture Fest. She came up from CO. this weekend past to practise. Now, other than around the campfire or piano at Christmas maybe one or two times since 1983, when I first moved East, we've not sung together at all. She's ben an elementary music teacher all of that time and I've performed with my brother, but not together.

This weekend was a BLAST! Our other sister joined us and we sang songs we'd not heard since we were kids. we foudn out we can still harmonise and bet still picks a mean baritone uke! At one point, we were having so much fun, bet had tears streaming down her face, trying to relay a joke to her daughter on the phone, totally unable to speak for the laughter and tears!

We worked hard, figured out our repetoire, and in the end, bet said it best, "This was fun. We should do it more often, not just when we have something coming up!"

I knew that somehow, our mom, who passed away in january, knew what we were up to and was smiling that beautiful smile of hers, with the faraway dreamy look in her eyes that she always had when she was so happy.

This was a wonderful coming together of sisters that I wouldn't have missed for the world and I know it did our hearts, souls, and voices a world of good. Here's to Folkfyre and my sisters in music!

Now, let's hear your stories!

love, katlaughing, positively bubbling!

Kat ... I can totally identify! Every July 4 week my father's family (himself, 4 brothers, one sister, spouses, first cousins (13 in all), children, etc.) gets together for a family reunion. We all sing and play instruments and tell stories and clog and eat. The nights are late, but we're up early every morning doing the same. My dad's youngest brother, Uncle Bobby, is a luthier and the family geneologist. I'm hoping my youngest sister and family and my middle sister's daughter and family are in attendance this year. The family reunion concept is dying out, except in the south, I think. Too bad ... it's a wonderful tradition. moonchild

Thanks, Kat. I think I needed this thread. I've lately resumed performing with my close friend and musical buddy of 20 years, and it means more to me than I can say. Making music is always the best part of any day, and when it's with someone you care for deeply, it makes it all the more special, even a spiritual experience. I played for my sister's wedding a year ago, and sang at the reception with another sister; it made a memorable evening for all time. I'm going to the Mt. Airy festival in North Carolina in a couple of weeks, hoping there'll be lots of music and no correctness to worry about. I'm reminded, in my current state of mind, about an album cover by a stringband in the early 80's (can't remember the band) titled something like "making music while the world burns" and it showed them sitting with their instruments around a campfire with an Earth globe in the middle of it. I used to think that was what I wanted, but the world was always there the next morning. But anyway, yes indeed, make more music and whenever you can, with old or new loved ones.

Thanks for what you wrote in the other thread I started today too.

Chet W.

Here's one I hear at song circle:

A Panda escaped from the zoo and went into a fine restaurant. He orders a dinner and eats, shoots the waiter, and leaves! So they arrest him and charge him with assault. But for his defence, the Panda simply instructed the court to look him up in the encyclopedia. And sure enough, right next to Panda, it said "Eats shoots and leaves.

HaHaHa :o)

Cute, Margie, but even funny references to guns and killing, esp. now, was one of the things I was hoping to avoid in this thread!

I had this gag as a part of the "Rugby" song "The Wild West Show" where all kinds of strange creatures are on exhibit and cautionary warnings to men about how dangerous the Lion is (Gentlemen, the Lion is a pussy that can eat YOU!) and to women about vegetarian bachelors (Ladies, all he does is eats roots shoots and leaves).

Glad you had a good get together with your sisters Kat.

My wife is back in Colorado with her Ma and her sisters now. I called them one time and got their answering machine. Sister-in-law Kelley was trying to record the message and the others were bugging her while she did it. The message goes something like this.....

Silence - background sounds - Kelley's voice "This is er - hee hee - er you know - ha ha ha".

Bert.

Darn, Bert, wish I was down there and could get to meet here. My other sisters had some really good friends down at Ft. Lewis in Durango. Thanks,

well, I got a pleasant surprise today; a request from my mother that I record a song for my sisters wedding in July. (I will not be able to attend either her "legal" wedding in CA the last week of june or the "official" one on Cape Cod July 3rd.)

My sister is all for it (I checked via e-mail). And through the back of my mind is running..."this is the same person that spent 30+ years telling me to shut up I sounded like a dying cow?"

So it looks like I will...along with another for my parents 55th anniversary (celebrated same weekend). Hey, the worst that can happen is they don't play it...

Actually annap....

Is the "...our own festival..." thread a positive or stressful thread?

To me it's extremely positive. Maybe not to you. Like Katlaughing with her sisters, it's the coming together of music, singing, love with Mudcatters.

Love.

Kat,

Between you n' me....that ones gone on a bit long...

Kinda reminds me of a one of those discussions shows kinda like Jerry Springer..or whatever his name is.

Lotta hollerin' and nothin' solved. Yes, it's an important subject, but it obviously joins the ranks of religion and politics for discussion.

Damn! Now it went and got into here!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Now there's positive.

Love, Annap
