Subject: RE: The Cat Came Back From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Apr 99 - 01:37 PM I haven't figured out a clever way to link directly to a song at the Levy Sheet Music Collection (click here), but the search engine at Levy is pretty easy to use if you work at it a bit. I was surprised to find that this was an old minstrel song. In its original form, it's a fairly strong ethnic insult. I guess it's a good reminder that racism was a way of life for our ancestors, and maybe we have made progress. Good song, nonetheless, but I'm glad it was "cleaned up" so now it's only prejudicial about cats (sorry, catspaw...) -Joe Offer- Click here for original sheet music |

Subject: RE: The Cat Came Back From: lesblank Date: 23 Apr 99 - 05:24 PM A Forum search should turn up a thread, perhaps a year old in which Don Meixner (I think it was he) and I exchanged verses. I sing that ditty every time I come into close contact with anything that has strings. |

Subject: RE: The Cat Came Back (animated video added june 2 From: sian, west wales Date: 25 Jun 07 - 12:00 PM I can't get Logdriver's Waltz to load on the NFB site. Great films, though I use (and prefer) another tune for The Cat Came Back. Why, oh why can't other broadcasters / programme commissioners see the potential for trad/folk songs like this? Well done, John. sian |

Subject: RE: The Cat Came Back (animated video added june 2007) From: john f weldon Date: 25 Jun 07 - 12:10 PM the NFB site is notoriously confusing and buggy! You're right! I will attempt to complain, but the last time I got them to fix something it took 6 months! AgggggH! Happily most of the other films work, and there are always lots of illegal copies of Loggie & many other NFB films kicking around the internet. The NFB tries to track them down and eliminate them, but they just pop up somewhere else. good hunting! |

Subject: RE: The Cat Came Back (animated video added june 2007) From: Rog Peek Date: 25 Jun 07 - 12:17 PM Cisco Houston's version: Old Mr. Johnson had troubles of his own Had an ol' yella' cat that wouldn't leave home He tried everything the cat to stay away Even took him up to Canada and told him for to stay But the cat came back the very next day Thought he was a gonner but the cat came back 'Cause he wouldn't stay away Gave the boy a dollar, the cat tom set afloat Took him up the river in a sack in a boat The fishing was fine 'til the word got around That the boat was missing and the boy was drowned But the kitty came back the very ......... The farmer on the corner said he'd shoot him on sight Loaded up his gun full of rocks and dynamite The explosion was heard all over town Pieces of the farmer was all that they found But the kitty came back the very............ Gave him to a man who went up in a balloon Told him for to leave him with the man in the moon The balloon was busted down to earth it sped Seven miles away they picked the man up dead But the cat came back the very......... Thought he'd found a way the cat for to fix Dropped him in an orange crate on route 66 Came a ten ton truck with a twenty ton load Scattered bits of orange crate all down the road But the cat came back the very.......... Poor old cat had a family of his own Seven little kittens 'til there came a cyclone Blew the house apart, tossed the cats around Air full of kittens, but not a one was found But the cat came back the very……….. Took him to the shop where the meat was ground Put him in the hopper when the butcher wasn't 'round The cat disappeared with a blood curdling shriek Town's meat tasted furry for a week But the cat came back the very............ Took him to Cape Canaveral put him in a place Shot him in a rocket way out into space Just when he thought it was out of human reach He got a call from Miami beach And the cat came back the very............. |

Subject: RE: The Cat Came Back (animated video added june 2007) From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Nov 07 - 04:16 PM Hi- This Amazon Search (click) will lead you to a surprising number of recordings. I like Fred Penner's version - and he has a sequel. This YouTube Search (click) will lead you to a number of videos, including the animated version that Katlaughing linked to above. Note that we have a link to a MIDI of the tune above, and several different versions are included in the crosslinks at the top of this page. Hope that helps. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: The Cat Came Back (animated video added june 2007) From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 09 Nov 07 - 12:18 PM This thread reminded me of another "cat song" by Hoyt Axton. I think the name was "Della and the Dealer." Chorus: "If that cat could talk, what tales he'd tell, About Della and the Dealer and the dog, as well, But the cat was cool, And he never said a mumblin' word." |
