Subject: Lloyd George Lyrics From: Seumas Date: 22 Apr 99 - 05:59 AM I remember a line from a song about Lloyd George who introduced the Old Age Pension in the UK. But I'm stuffed if I can recall the title or rest of the lyrics! Anybody know it? The line went something like: "Oh he took me out of the workhouse, and gave me life that's free. 5 shillings a week for cheating death, That's what Lloyd George gave me." Cheers Seumas |

Subject: RE: Lloyd George Lyrics From: Joe_F Date: 06 Feb 03 - 07:16 PM So there *is* a bawdy version of "Lloyd George Knows My Father"! When I was at Caltech in the 1950s, it was sung at every sufficiently drunken party, but with "father" all the way thru. There, I was confidently told that the knowledge mentioned was carnal. Much later, I read somewhere that in Britain the song was affectionate & was meant to imply that Lloyd George was a man of the people. It somehow found its way to the U.S., where its origin was forgotten, and was popular (I was told) among Girl Scouts. Some college student must have come up with the notion that it was obscene. I am astonished that this curious song seems not to have been previously discussed on the Mudcat. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lloyd George From: Phil Edwards Date: 28 Jan 09 - 09:41 AM What's this then? It's a live recording of Tony Capstick singing Lloyd George (the '5/- a week' song), which the poster seems to think is from ...Does a Turn_ - which it ain't. Anyone know where this is from, or who 'pinknblues1' might be when he's at home? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lloyd George From: GUEST,rossmcl177 Date: 07 Feb 09 - 12:40 AM pinknblkues1 is a very friendly guy - I am the one who wrote to him on youtube and requested that he post this song! He had posted some other Capstick stuff, but I remembered this song from my youth, so I wrote to him asking if he had it and if so would he post it. He sent me back a really nice message straight away, and did post the song - very friendly nice guy. I wish someone knew who wrote the song though. :) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lloyd George From: Phil Edwards Date: 07 Feb 09 - 04:56 AM Ross - the 'Professor Moorman' referred to in the notes is the author. Here's the title page & foreword of the book it appears in: SONGS OF THE RIDINGS BY F. W. MOORMAN EDITOR OF "YORKSHIRE DIALECT POEMS, 1673-1915' LONDON ELKIN MATHEWS, CORK STREET 1918 I DEDICATE THIS VOLUME TO THE YORKSHIRE MEMBERS OF THE WORKERS' EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION PREFACE ABOUT two years ago I published a collection of Yorkshire dialect poems, chosen from many authors and extending over a period of two hundred and fifty years. The volume was well received, and there are abundant signs that the interest in dialect literature is steadily growing in all parts of the county and beyond its borders. What is most encouraging is to find that the book has found an entrance into the homes of Yorkshire peasants and artisans where the works of our great national poets are unknown. I now essay the more venturesome task of publishing dialect verses of my own. Most of the poems contained in this little volume have appeared, anonymously, in the Yorkshire press, and I have now decided to reissue them in book form and with my name on the title-page. [endquote] Found here. |
