Subject: RE: Highway 101 From: slantt@yahoo.com Date: 06 Apr 99 - 08:32 AM God - I can't believe I remembered this... 'He wore black denim trousers and motorcycle boots and a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back. He had a screamin' cycle that took off like a gun. That fool was the terror of highway 101' Song ended with his supposed demise in an encounter with a semi and only finding said trousers and boots on the highway... Name of the tune is 'Black Denim Trousers' from the mid 50s. Used to hear this on AM radio WELI out of New Haven, Ct. on a night program called 'Juke Box Saturday Night' (I wonder where they got that name..?)

Subject: RE: Highway 101 From: slantt@yahoo.com Date: 06 Apr 99 - 09:00 AM Now that I think about it.. ' he had a hopped-up cycle...' (Not screamin cycle) 'But he met a screamin diesel that was California bound and in the wreckage all they found - were black denim trousers and motorcycle boots and a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back.' 'But they never found the cycle that took off like a gun and they never found the terror of highway 101.' |

Subject: RE: Highway 101 From: Ferrara Date: 06 Apr 99 - 01:04 PM The site shown above is RealAudio, which isn't working on my computer so I thought I'd go ahead and post the lyrics. This is from memory, a friend wrote them out for me a year or so ago when I was leading an open sing with "clothing" as the topic. But of course I can't locate the paper with the words... - Rita Ferrara
CHORUS: He wore black denim trousers and motorcycle boots
Oh, he never washed his face and he never combed his hair
Oh, he had a little girlfriend and her name was Mary Lou,
Oh, Mary Lou she pleaded and she begged him not to leave,
LAST CHORUS: Were his black denim trousers and motorcycle boots |

Subject: RE: Highway 101 From: Bruce O. Date: 06 Apr 99 - 01:29 PM Unlike I-5, highway 101 is mostly two lane road, very winding in some places, and through all the towns on the way, so 500 miles would be a very long day, but it's a very scenic route, especially along the Oregon coast. I lived just a few miles from it when this song appeared, (where it loops around the Olympic Penninsula and comes back to meet itself), but I never heard of the song before now. [On the edges of Olympic National Park the views are great, but in the park all you can see are the road and trees] Logging trucks were always a danger, because to save gas the truckers would take the trucks out of gear going down a winding mountain road, (Northwestern Washington and Northern California) and without the braking power of the engine they would frequently be going too fast to make a curve and over turn, sometimes taking another vehicle with them. Jack-knifing on rain slicked roads was also pretty common with them (Northwestern Washington get a lot of rain). I knew some people killed when their car couldn't avoid a truck that jack-knifed right in front of them. |

Subject: ADDPOP: BLACK DENIM TROUSERS AND..(Leiber/Stoller) From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Apr 99 - 01:44 PM On Highway 101 in Northern California, they're very generous to nighttime drivers. They have floodlights on the landslide areas, so you can see the rocks as they slide down to bury you. At one point on 101 in Oregon, my car got splashed by the spray from the waves that were crashing in. It's an awesome drive, especially in winter. In Los Angeles County, Ventura Boulevard is old 101, and parts of it still remind me of the idealized view we had of the Southern California of the 1950's. -Joe Offer- Rita, what did Bill say when you sang THAT at an open sing?? I wish I coulda been there. Well, Ferrara posted her recollection of this above, but I verified this with the recording. -Joe- (5 Aug 2008) BLACK DENIM TROUSERS AND MOTORCYCLE BOOTS Words and Music by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller as sung on "The Diamonds Collection" -- Stardust CD-1010 -charted by The Cheers at # 6 in 1955 He wore black denim trousers and motorcycle boots And a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back. He had a hopped-up 'cicle that took off like a gun. That fool was the terror of Highway One-oh-one. Well, he never washed his face and he never combed his hair. He had axle grease embedded underneath his fingernails. On the muscle of his arm was a red tattoo, A picture of a heart saying "Mother, I love you." He had a pretty girlfriend by the name of Mary Lou, But he treated her just like he treated all the rest, And everybody pitied her 'cause everybody knew He loved that doggone motorcycle best. He wore black denim trousers and motorcycle boots And a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back. He had a hopped-up 'cicle that took off like a gun. That fool was the terror of Highway One-oh-one. Mary Lou, poor girl, she pleaded and she begged him not to leave. She said: "I've got a feeling if you ride tonight I'll grieve." But her tears were shed in vain and her every word was lost In the rumble of his engine and the smoke from his exhaust. He took off like a devil; there was fire in his eyes. He said, "I'll go a thousand miles before the sun can rise." But he hit a screamin' diesel that was California-bound And when they cleared the wreckage, all they found Was his black denim trousers and motorcycle boots And a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back, But they couldn't find the 'cicle that took off like a gun, And they never found the terror of Highway One-oh-one. Lyrics transcribed by "Robin Hood" (a legendary transcriber of lyrics), copied from http://uk.geocities.com/hyohsilver/words.htm which plays the recording over and over and over..... |

Subject: RE: Highway 101 From: Ferrara Date: 07 Apr 99 - 09:01 AM Joe, He's used to my ways by now, though that doesn't stop him from grumbling. LaMarca says she was nervous about her first open sing for fear her repertoire wouldn't be "pure folk" enough. When I sang the Beatles song "Rocky Raccoon", with a strong supporting cast on the kazoo parts, she decided we weren't quite the purist snobs we're reported to be. We have one guy at our open sings with an immense repertoire of folk songs. Bill respects his musical knowledge tremendously. But of all the songs Barry does, my favorite is "Love Potion Number 9." When someone throws out a novelty song like that, you'd be surprised how many people join in with gusto. On the other hand, Bill just sits there bemused. He has avoided pop music so efficiently that often he's the only person in the room who never even heard of the song.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots From: GUEST Date: 30 Jul 10 - 11:57 PM I have a copy of the song...and since I learned the song from a player piano roll as a little kid, I always thought it was a truck. However, on the actual song track, the sound effects played at the end of the song are for a railroad crossing...indicating that he hit a screamin' diesel train and not a tractor trailer. |

Subject: ADD: L'Homme a La Moto From: Joe Offer Date: 31 Jul 10 - 04:05 AM Would you believe that this song was record by Edith Piaf? He wore motorbike pants and boots, A black leather blazer with an eagle on the back. His motorbike went like a cannonball Spreading terror in the entire region. He never combed his hair, He never washed himself, Sludge filled his fingernails but on his biceps he had, A tattoo featuring a blue heart on pale skin, And inside it one could read "Mother I Love you". He had a girlfriend, Marie-Lou was her name, They all took pity on her, a child of her age... Because everyone knew well how much he loved His bitch of a motorbike above all things. But the words were lost, her tears also In the noise of the machine and of the exhaust pipe. He lept like a demon with flames in his eyes, At the crossing it was like thundering fire Against a steamtrain that sped towards the South. And when they came to sift out the debris, On trouva sa culotte, ses bottes de moto Son blouson de cuir noir avec un aigle sur le dos Mais plus rien de la moto et plus rien de ce démon Qui semait la terreur dans toute la région. They found his motorbike pants and his boots His black leather blazer with an eagle on the back But nothing left of this motorbike and nothing left of this demon Who once spread terror in the entire region. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots From: beeliner Date: 31 Jul 10 - 05:45 AM Great song, originally by the Cheers (their only hit?) but there were several cover versions. He had a HOPPED-UP cycle (pronounced 'sickle'). |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle B From: Charley Noble Date: 31 Jul 10 - 08:46 AM My brother and I used to drive our mother crazy singing this song in the 1950's. We only managed to buy a Lambretta motorscooter rather than a "hopped-up cycle" but, hey, we did the best we could! We were the "terror" of the grey squirrels and rabbits along the logging roads of Georgetown Isle! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
