From: GUEST,John Van Peenen Date: 31 Oct 04 - 05:33 PM I gather you have the lyrics and variations of "The Ballad of Samuel Hall" that begins "Oh, my name is Samuel Hall, Samuel Hall, Samuel Hall, and I hate you one and all, you're a bunch of muckers all, damn your eyes, curse your souls....." I wonder if you could enmail them to me. Thanks John Van Peenen |

Subject: RE: Sam Hall, Chimney Sweep (Oh my name it is..) From: gecko Date: 31 Oct 04 - 06:13 PM What hilarious memories I have of this session ballad sung with gusto at Australian (NT)Folk Festivals - mostly late at night when we've all had more than our fair share of the amber liquid or other lubricating fluids! |

Subject: RE: Sam Hall, Chimney Sweep (Oh my name it is..) From: Big Jim from Jackson Date: 31 Oct 04 - 09:00 PM The Vipers had a nice version of Sam Hall. It can be found on a 3 CD set by Bear Family Records. Once in a while it comes up on eBay on a record by The Soho Skiffle Group. That is really the Vipers on a recording issued in the USA but not using their name. |

Subject: RE: Sam Hall, Chimney Sweep (Oh my name it is..) From: Bill Hahn//\\ Date: 31 Oct 04 - 09:07 PM Funny thing---I just played this on my program today---the Oscar Brand Version. Thoughm, in that one he was not a chimney sweep---a killer---Damn your eyes--one and all, as Sam Hall states before his hanging. Check Oscar Brand's site (I assume he has one) for his lyrics. It is on his Bawdy Songs and Back Room Ballads. Bill Hahn |

Oh I rode up Tyburn Hill in a cart, in a cart, Oh I rode up Tyburn Hill in a cart, Oh I rode up Tyburn Hill, and I stopped and had me gill, Saying the best of friends must part, so must I, so must I, Saying the best of friends must part, so must I I saw Molly in the crowd, in the crowd, in the crowd, I saw Molly in the crowd, in the crowd, I saw Molly in the crowd an I shouted out aloud MOLLY AI'NT YER BLOODY PRAHD, DAMN YOUR EYES Up the ladder I must grope, that's no joke' thats no joke, Up the ladder I must grope, thats no joke, Up the ladder I must grope, an' Jack Ketch will pull the rope, And I'll tell him as I CHOKE, DAMN YOUE EYaaaaghs! If you can arrange for someone to hit the lights and plunge the place into darkness on the last word it is very effective! FC |

Subject: RE: Sam Hall, Chimney Sweep (Oh my name it is..) From: Lighter Date: 01 Nov 04 - 10:40 AM Cecil Sharp collected this song as "Jack Hall," without the curses. The first time I heard it blended with "Sam Hall" was on Dubliners album in the late sixties. |
|
Subject: RE: Sam Hall, Chimney Sweep (Oh my name it is..) From: Lighter Date: 01 Nov 04 - 10:49 AM The LP I heard it on was most likely "At Home with the Dubliners" (EMI, 1969). Like later recordings, Sam Hall's name replaced Jack Hall's, but Sharp's text and tune were not, IIRC, very much changed. |
