Subject: Looking for Cdn. Source for Delta Blues From: Steve Latimer Date: 24 Mar 99 - 01:06 PM I am trying to find a source in Canada for Authentic Delta Blues recordings and field hollers. Does anyone know of a retailer or library near Toronto who would have pre 1940 material by artists such as Son House, Charley Patton, Willie Brown etc? Failing that, an internet retailer of this material would be helpful. Steve Latimer |

Subject: RE: Looking for Cdn. Source for Delta Blues From: Peter T. Date: 24 Mar 99 - 02:32 PM Dear Steve, Rick F. may be able to help you as he is a local, I think. The Metro Toronto Library (5th floor public listening booths) has a substantial collection of delta blues recordings (Son House et al), Alan Lomax recordings for Smithsonian, etc. It also has a fine collection of books. For retailers, HMV (last time I was there) had a really good selection of the main blues recordings, as does Towers, and good old Sam the Record Man (for some of the out of the way stuff). Try Sam's first to support local Canadian enterprise !! These are all on Yonge Street. There is also a Toronto Blues Society with an Internet site and a magazine (but I don't have the references) with ads for out-of-the-way stuff. I once picked up a copy of the magazine at Towers when I was there, so you could sniff around there for the most recent issue. Yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Looking for Cdn. Source for Delta Blues From: Steve Latimer Date: 24 Mar 99 - 03:06 PM Peter, Thanks for the information. I live in Whitby and don't get in to T.O. all that often, but will be at Massey Hall tonight, I'll try to drop in to Sam's. Where is the branch of the library that you refer to? I should have thought of Rick F and the Toronto Blues Society. Thanks again. Steve |

Subject: RE: Looking for Cdn. Source for Delta Blues From: Peter T. Date: 26 Mar 99 - 08:54 AM Dear Steve, I was referring to the Main library, just north of Bloor Street, also on Yonge. It was where I first listened long ago to the Lomax Son House recordings (the one with the freight train whistling by.... he had to stop because the boss man came around) and the 1960's recordings (Death Letter Blues, greatest record ever), so that is how I know about their collection! (That was how and where I got utterly hooked on delta blues). On a good day, you can start at the library, listen to a few, stroll downhill, spend all the money you have in the world, and be on Yonge Street all the time! Yours, Peter

Subject: RE: Looking for Cdn. Source for Delta Blues From: Steve Latimer Date: 26 Mar 99 - 11:24 AM Peter, I know the branch that you mean, I will have to schedule a day there. And I'll be it's been over twenty years since I've been to the Downtown Sam's, I always found it to have so much more character than any of it's branches. Alas, I didn't make it the other night, was a little for the Jeff Beck show. As far as spending all the money I have in the world, I can do that at the Whitby Beckers. Regards, Steve

Subject: RE: Looking for Cdn. Source for Delta Blues From: Peter T. Date: 28 Mar 99 - 01:58 PM Gee, I didn't know that Beckers stocked the blues; I thought working there or buying stuff there gave you the blues. I'll have to check it out. Obviously things are improving on the milk circuit. Yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Looking for Cdn. Source for Delta Blues From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 28 Mar 99 - 08:18 PM Steve, Elderly.com is an internet music retailer with a fair collection of CD's. There should not be any problem in converting your credit card to US dollars for a transaction. Roger in Baltimore |

Subject: RE: Looking for Cdn. Source for Delta Blues From: Peter T Date: 29 Mar 99 - 12:42 PM Becker's have a great selection of Cd's, haven't you seen them? They all seem to have sunsets or candles on their covers or have "greatest" in their titles. What I was really saying is that a bag of 2% will pretty much eat up my net worth. Can't wait to the hear the Lomax Son House (and hopefully many others) recordings. Roger, thank you. I'll visit that site, but I think I will first check out the Library that Peter suggested to find out which artists and songs I would like to purchase. |
