Subject: upbeat songs a cappella? From: Lisa Date: 07 Mar 97 - 11:58 AM Hello All, Wondering if you could provide some suggestions? Singing is a hobby of mine, and very occationally I do sing in public. I prefer singing slow, sad songs like Annachie Gordon and She Moves Through the Fair, but I'd really like to learn some upbeat songs that sound good a cappella. If you could direct me to some songs, and maybe recordings I could check out, I'd be very thankfull! Lisa |

Subject: RE: upbeat songs a cappella? From: Dulcmrdav@aol.com Date: 07 Mar 97 - 06:07 PM There are some neat novelty songs on an album by Carl Peterson. The name of it is "Silly Songs". I especially like one called "The shape of things" about a love triangle gone ary. He accompanies himself on the guitar but you don't need it for these songs. Check out Eric Bogel and Cliff Halsam also. Much Luck, Dave |

Subject: RE: upbeat songs a cappella? From: Arnowitt arnowitt@sover.net Date: 07 Mar 97 - 09:42 PM I'm fond of Steve Goodman's "Vegamatic" and Mark Gram's "Their Brains Were Small and They Died." Both have a jazz blues feel, and work very well a cappella. If you can't find 'em, pop your name and address in and I'll send you a homemade tape. Also I believe that Sally Rogers "Circle of the Sun" is a nice one, a lively "zipper song" about birth, growth, marriage, death and birth.

Subject: RE: upbeat songs a cappella? From: Moira Cameron, moirakc@internorth.com Date: 08 Mar 97 - 05:06 AM Just about any song can be sung a capella. I have been singing any and all types of traditional and contemporary folk songs without instruments for years. I think there is often too much reliance these days on instruments. Of course, I accompany myself sometimes as well. Some of the songs I sing a capella include Frankie Armstrong numbers, old English Music Hall (Vaudeville) songs--even the odd Leon Rosselson song (like "We Sell Everything"-- a real challenge as an a acapella number.) Just pick your favourite upbeat numbers and work out your own unique a capella arrangements for them. Have fun! |

Subject: RE: upbeat songs a cappella? From: Anne Cormack Date: 08 Mar 97 - 09:59 AM I have to agree with Moira - almost any song of any kind can be sung unaccompanied - and you have so much freedom in picking an interesting and entertaining style. I've been singing a capella for years and do everything from Burn's "Silver Tassie" to Dave Goulder's "Sexton and the Carpenter" to the Corries' version of "Kate Dalrymple", not to mention music hall stuff like "Sister Susie's Sewing Shirts For Soldiers"!!! The best thing about unaccompanied singing is you don't have to lug great heavy instruments about!! Just turn up and you're ready to go. In fact, in Perth, Western Australia, where I now live, we have a monthly Unaccompanied Singers and Reciters Club where no instruments are allowed!!!! So just learn a few songs and go for it! Regards, Anne |

Subject: RE: upbeat songs a cappella? From: Will Date: 12 Mar 97 - 10:40 AM The Nylons do a really nice job a capella (with lots of electronic assistance at times). They have several albums. I like their versions of Love Potion #9 and Up On The Rooftop a lot. |
