Subject: RE: Tunes Origin and History From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 11 Mar 99 - 11:15 PM I assume Scottish. Miss MacLeod's. Lively little knees up piece. I have it recorded by Cape Breton fiddler Jerry Holland, and he plays it with Sheehan's and The Flowers of Edinburgh. He gives it as traditional. Unfortunately the liner notes don't give much more in the way of information which is a shame because he is apparently one who is knowledgable in the history of the tunes he plays. |

Subject: RE: Tunes Origin and History From: Bruce O. Date: 11 Mar 99 - 11:26 PM S. P. Bayard, 'Dance to the Fiddle, March to the Fife', #249, said Gow's version is the earliest he had found. He gives titles for it found in the U.S. as: Miss McLeod's, The Virgina Reel, Old Mammy Knickerbocker, Nigger in the Woodpile, John Brown, and Don't you want to go to heaven Uncle Joe. |

Subject: RE: Tunes Origin and History From: j0_77 Date: 11 Mar 99 - 11:36 PM See 'Fundamentals ...... the Violin' by Motzart It was common to have a ship's fiddler in the R Navy and they had manny a tune now long forgotten. I've a few and a fiddle to play em on as well. My Granpa played a bunch too. Actually the first part of Miss Mc Cloud's belongs in a bunch of string crossing exercises in common time - the second part, however, is unique. |

Subject: RE: Tunes Origin and History From: dick greenhaus Date: 12 Mar 99 - 12:49 PM About 40 years ago, I went to a Pennsylvania Dutch Festival at Kutztown, and found myself sitting in with the local square dance band (banjo). The caller was totally astounded that I knew the tune he was calling to: Kutztown Special. (otherwise known as Miss McLeod's).
Obviously of German origin. |
