Subject: the New Carissa From: Margo Date: 03 Mar 99 - 11:30 AM Living here in Vancouver Washington we see nightly the news about the ship the New Carissa. The New Carissa somehow came too close to shore and got stuck in the sand very close to the beach in Coos Bay Oregon. It seems like a situation ripe for the writing of a ballad: -It began to leak fuel, what to do? -They fire bombed it to burn off the fuel, which took more than one attempt. -volunteers helped to clean up oily birds -the ship tore in two pieces -the beached bow was positioned just right with cables and tugged out to sea where it was to be sunk -last night's gales broke it loose from the tug......the end of the story seems nowhere near at this point. Any takers, or is this my job? Margarita |

The morning paper tells me that the gift shop in Waldport, to meet the demand of a large influx of sightseers, has printed up a t-shirt with a picture of the beached bow, and this message: "The New Carissa Tour: Coming Soon to a Coastal Town Near You." I live about 35 miles inland of Lincoln City, which is another 30 or so north of the New Carissa's present location, but after that storm the night before, I wouldn't have been surprised to find her in my driveway. What a nightmare it has truly been, and continues to be. The ship became grounded February 4th, and its plight is still ongoing. As far as traveling to go see the ship, come on! It's a damn ship stuck on the beach! That's truly all there is to see. I guess that's easy for me to say. Although I live in Coos Bay, I have not been one of the "regulars" that sit perched atop Radar Road to watch the progress. I have been amazed at the entourage this ship attracts - whether in pieces or whole! Before they used napalm and torpedoes to ignite the fuel trapped aboard the ship, the newscasts in Portland and other areas were warning people NOT to go to Coos Bay, as the fumes would be toxic. I *never* heard that on the local news. The days that ignited the fuel (days plural because the first fire failed) found hoards of people perched atop Radar Road with their binoculars and expensive cameras. One entrepenuerial resident of the Radar Road area sold baked goods and had a binocular rental. The stern of this ship is still stuck on the beach of Coos Bay, with no plans in the near future for removal. Thee have been plenty of talks about turning it into a tourist attraction. e-gads! But when I heard about the line breaking in the process of dragging the bow out to see to sink her, I found myself (embarassingly) laughing obnoxiously at the misfortune of it becoming re-beached. The clean-up continues, and will continue although the beach is once again open for public use. Now with more details at hand(napalm, binoculars, etc.), perhaps the songwriters among us will feel more inspired. Rose, from the formerly pristine southern Oregon coast |

I remember my Mom wouldn't let me go with my friend and his family on a Sunday drive to see "Big Muskie," which at the time was the world's largest dragline. What are we thinking sometimes? Maybe I am wrong, but isn't the root of folk music tapping into the lives of the people - the things that effect us, and our responses? To me, that's what folk music is about. I can see a song about the New Carissa being a way to hand down the experience to future generations. I can see a song being a comfort to those directly effected by the oil spill. I can see a song as a tool for teaching children about this piece of history in the making. Nothing to be sorry about. I certainly wasn't sharing with the intent of shaming those who were suggesting creating a song that reflects the situation. Just sharing details. What would the song be without mention of napalm, plastic explosives, the endangered Snowy Plover, hoards of people sitting of the hilltop with binoculars (when the health department wanted to close schools early due to potential health risks), pumping the fuel, the ship breaking apart, dragging part of the ship only to have it re-beached. There certainly is a lot of material for a song. Rose

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Penny Date: 08 Mar 99 - 04:48 PM I haven't heard a thing about this over here: reading it brought back the smell of the oil lying a foot deep on the beach in Dover Harbour when there was a string of ships hitting each others' wrecks, and a tanker blew up in the night. (Were you there then Pete M.?) I woke in the night to the roar and windows rattling, thought it was an earthquake, thought I should be getting outdoors but was too asleep to do it. Then our neighbour came rushing round: her phone wasn't working, and her husband, a pilot (the sea sort), was out on a tanker, and we all hung round, not knowing what to say, until Trinity House confirmed that he was not on the ship concerned. I do hope it is resolved soon. Like the song. Haven't they learned anything from the whale? |

We lived there 32 years ago---owned the FOLK ART SHOP there. Probably the first banjos and dulcimers on the coast. I can just see the thing threatening the bridge at Yaquinna Bay/Newport and the townsfolk having to actually free "Free Willy" ,or whatever that whale is there, so he can push it out to sea! The newspaper reports oil gobs drifting in up the coast near the mouth of the Columbia and into Washington, tho one report says that it doesn't match the New Carissa's oil, and must have come from some other leaking ship. The first time there was a storm, the tow broke, and the bow washed up on the beach at Waldport. (where it oiled another bunch of sea birds and critters) THEN they towed the bow off the beach there, took it out to sea about 50 miles and bombed (and torpedoed) the HECK out of it till it and burned and sank. Yes, the bow was towed out to sea, broke loose during a storm, ran aground near Waldport, towed out a second time and then sunk by a torpedo from a submarine. The stern, however, is still an ongoing dilemna. There is a 44-person crew, including 9 divers working 12-hour days, 7 days a week salvaging pieces of the ship and preparing the forward engine room bulkhead for a voyage (being towed) out to sea. The next step at this time is to remove the ship's cargo crane and machinery from the engine room to make it lighter. Had you done the touristy circuit while in town, you might have visited the official "New Carissa Information Center" (oversized trailer) next to the Chamber of Commerce. Aren't you bummed to know you missed *that* opportunity!? Great song, Celeste. Enjoyed that one. Rose |

The plan is to haul it out to sea and sink it (as with the bow). The salvage tug pulled it loose today, and the crew discovered yet another hole in the stern, which they are now trying to patch, as the hulk lists toward the beach at Coos Bay. Wish them luck.
