Subject: the New Carissa From: Margo Date: 03 Mar 99 - 11:30 AM Living here in Vancouver Washington we see nightly the news about the ship the New Carissa. The New Carissa somehow came too close to shore and got stuck in the sand very close to the beach in Coos Bay Oregon. It seems like a situation ripe for the writing of a ballad: -It began to leak fuel, what to do? -They fire bombed it to burn off the fuel, which took more than one attempt. -volunteers helped to clean up oily birds -the ship tore in two pieces -the beached bow was positioned just right with cables and tugged out to sea where it was to be sunk -last night's gales broke it loose from the tug......the end of the story seems nowhere near at this point. Any takers, or is this my job? Margarita |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Barbara Date: 04 Mar 99 - 01:49 AM Yeah, except now she's at Waldport(just south of Newport) instead of Coos Bay.(the bow, anyway) That's up the coast 50 miles or so and closer to me. Spreading joy wherever she goes. One of my friends just asked me if I want to drive down the coast tomorrow and see the wreck. Blessings, Barbara |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Barbara Date: 04 Mar 99 - 12:56 PM Sounds good to me, Margarita. The morning paper tells me that the gift shop in Waldport, to meet the demand of a large influx of sightseers, has printed up a t-shirt with a picture of the beached bow, and this message: "The New Carissa Tour: Coming Soon to a Coastal Town Near You." I live about 35 miles inland of Lincoln City, which is another 30 or so north of the New Carissa's present location, but after that storm the night before, I wouldn't have been surprised to find her in my driveway. You know the weather is bad when Oregonians start complaining about it. Blessings, Barbara |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Margo Date: 05 Mar 99 - 09:14 AM Hey Lonesome EJ! I like that first line! It would be great if we could build on it, different people adding a line. By the time it's done, it will have been written by a long list of mudcatters. I'd like to add to it but I'm not a good lyricist. Barbara, I love the tee shirt! That's a hoot. Ross, I think it may be odd-a-sea Margarita |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Rosebrook Date: 07 Mar 99 - 12:29 AM Having been away from Mudcat for awhile, I was surprised to see a thread naming the New Carissa! What a nightmare it has truly been, and continues to be. The ship became grounded February 4th, and its plight is still ongoing. As far as traveling to go see the ship, come on! It's a damn ship stuck on the beach! That's truly all there is to see. I guess that's easy for me to say. Although I live in Coos Bay, I have not been one of the "regulars" that sit perched atop Radar Road to watch the progress. I have been amazed at the entourage this ship attracts - whether in pieces or whole! Before they used napalm and torpedoes to ignite the fuel trapped aboard the ship, the newscasts in Portland and other areas were warning people NOT to go to Coos Bay, as the fumes would be toxic. I *never* heard that on the local news. The days that ignited the fuel (days plural because the first fire failed) found hoards of people perched atop Radar Road with their binoculars and expensive cameras. One entrepenuerial resident of the Radar Road area sold baked goods and had a binocular rental. The stern of this ship is still stuck on the beach of Coos Bay, with no plans in the near future for removal. Thee have been plenty of talks about turning it into a tourist attraction. e-gads! But when I heard about the line breaking in the process of dragging the bow out to see to sink her, I found myself (embarassingly) laughing obnoxiously at the misfortune of it becoming re-beached. The clean-up continues, and will continue although the beach is once again open for public use. Now with more details at hand(napalm, binoculars, etc.), perhaps the songwriters among us will feel more inspired. Rose, from the formerly pristine southern Oregon coast |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Mar 99 - 12:40 AM Thank you for the info Rose...and I'm sorry. Do we ever think about these things in context? I come from the Appalachian foothills where Strip Mining hit hard. I remember my Mom wouldn't let me go with my friend and his family on a Sunday drive to see "Big Muskie," which at the time was the world's largest dragline. What are we thinking sometimes? I don't think I ever thanked my Mom when I was older...Should have!!! catspaw |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Rosebrook Date: 07 Mar 99 - 03:15 PM catspaw, Nothing to be sorry about. Maybe I am wrong, but isn't the root of folk music tapping into the lives of the people - the things that effect us, and our responses? To me, that's what folk music is about. I can see a song about the New Carissa being a way to hand down the experience to future generations. I can see a song being a comfort to those directly effected by the oil spill. I can see a song as a tool for teaching children about this piece of history in the making. Nothing to be sorry about. I certainly wasn't sharing with the intent of shaming those who were suggesting creating a song that reflects the situation. Just sharing details. What would the song be without mention of napalm, plastic explosives, the endangered Snowy Plover, hoards of people sitting of the hilltop with binoculars (when the health department wanted to close schools early due to potential health risks), pumping the fuel, the ship breaking apart, dragging part of the ship only to have it re-beached. There certainly is a lot of material for a song. Rose

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Penny Date: 08 Mar 99 - 04:48 PM I haven't heard a thing about this over here: reading it brought back the smell of the oil lying a foot deep on the beach in Dover Harbour when there was a string of ships hitting each others' wrecks, and a tanker blew up in the night. (Were you there then Pete M.?) I woke in the night to the roar and windows rattling, thought it was an earthquake, thought I should be getting outdoors but was too asleep to do it. Then our neighbour came rushing round: her phone wasn't working, and her husband, a pilot (the sea sort), was out on a tanker, and we all hung round, not knowing what to say, until Trinity House confirmed that he was not on the ship concerned. I do hope it is resolved soon. Like the song. Haven't they learned anything from the whale? |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Art Thieme Date: 08 Mar 99 - 05:21 PM Say folks, was Depoe Bay's inlet ever threatened during the ship's wanderings? We lived there 32 years ago---owned the FOLK ART SHOP there. Probably the first banjos and dulcimers on the coast. I can just see the thing threatening the bridge at Yaquinna Bay/Newport and the townsfolk having to actually free "Free Willy" ,or whatever that whale is there, so he can push it out to sea! What a flick that'll make... Art |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Barbara Date: 08 Mar 99 - 06:14 PM This morning's news is that the New Carissa is once more on her way out to sea, the tug having finally pulled her loose of the Waldport sandbar at 3:30 this morning after a couple unsucessful tries. The newspaper reports oil gobs drifting in up the coast near the mouth of the Columbia and into Washington, tho one report says that it doesn't match the New Carissa's oil, and must have come from some other leaking ship. Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Margo Date: 03 Sep 99 - 03:28 PM IT'S HAPPENED! SOMEONE HAS WRITTEN A WONDERFUL TONGUE IN CHEEK BALLAD OF THE NEW CARISSA. Was over at Jonathan Lay's house and he sang his newly recorded ballad for me. It is well done; clever verbage, great puns, from beach to sinking, you will want to get this one. (Jonathan has no idea I'm being crassly commercial and promoting this) There is no gain in this for me, I just think you all will want to hear this one. SO, As soon as I know how you can get your hot little hands on it, I'll let you know. (It's a "single" CD) Margarita, still chuckling about the Ballad of the New Carissa by Jonathan Lay |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Sep 99 - 02:44 AM I think the stern is 30 feet under water, Barbara; and I believe the bow was towed into Coos Bay for dismantling - but that's only what I've gathered from healf-heard comments in the Coos Bay area. I wish I knew the true facts. Let's hear them there songs, eh? -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Barbara Date: 04 Sep 99 - 10:44 AM Noooo, they towed the bow out to sea. The first time there was a storm, the tow broke, and the bow washed up on the beach at Waldport. (where it oiled another bunch of sea birds and critters) THEN they towed the bow off the beach there, took it out to sea about 50 miles and bombed (and torpedoed) the HECK out of it till it and burned and sank. LOTS of pix in the newspapers. See, you Californians don't have ALL the fun. Blessings, Barbara |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Rosebrook Date: 10 Sep 99 - 11:46 PM Joe, I am sooooo bummed that I missed the opportunity to meet you! Next time you're in Coos Bay, please give me a holler! Yes, the bow was towed out to sea, broke loose during a storm, ran aground near Waldport, towed out a second time and then sunk by a torpedo from a submarine. The stern, however, is still an ongoing dilemna. There is a 44-person crew, including 9 divers working 12-hour days, 7 days a week salvaging pieces of the ship and preparing the forward engine room bulkhead for a voyage (being towed) out to sea. The next step at this time is to remove the ship's cargo crane and machinery from the engine room to make it lighter. Had you done the touristy circuit while in town, you might have visited the official "New Carissa Information Center" (oversized trailer) next to the Chamber of Commerce. Aren't you bummed to know you missed *that* opportunity!? Great song, Celeste. Enjoyed that one. Rose |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: MAG (inactive) Date: 05 Oct 99 - 06:16 PM I second Margarita on Jonathan's song; he sang it at Portland Song Circle last week's Monday, and it is hysterical. PS; Margo's song is eminently singable, and her concertina adds the perfect touch. MA |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Margo Date: 06 Oct 99 - 02:49 PM Thank you MAG! It was such a thrill to hear all those voices joining in. Now I guess I've experienced what other songwriters have, hearing someone else sing and enjoy your song. But y'all ought to check out Jonathan's lyrics (link three posts above). He's going to record Monday night, and hopefully that will be the finishing of it. The CD will be available as a single. Remember when there were the single 45's? Hey! That's my age since yesterday! Haha Margarita |

Subject: RE: the New Carissa From: Barbara Date: 12 Oct 99 - 09:15 PM Y'all might be interested to know that they are, even as I type, patching the stern with an eye to hauling it off tomorrow (Wednesday) at high tide. The plan is to haul it out to sea and sink it (as with the bow). The salvage tug pulled it loose today, and the crew discovered yet another hole in the stern, which they are now trying to patch, as the hulk lists toward the beach at Coos Bay. Wish them luck. Blessings, Barbara |

Subject: Lyr Add: NEW CARISSA (Wendy Joseph) From: GUEST,Wendy Joseph Date: 17 Nov 02 - 04:15 AM Yet another New Carissa song. Enjoy! "New Carissa,"to the tune of Stan Rogers' "Mary Ellen Carter" by Wendy Joseph 10/10/02 She ran aground in February, 1999 Down on the shore in Coos Bay, upon the sand so fine She came to get wood chippings, sailing through a northwest blow But the gallant New Carissa settled low The engineers all scratched their heads and wondered what to do They tried to drain her bunker fuel, but it started to leak through They ended up in therapy, which probably won't end But will the gallant New Carissa rise again? Rise again, rise again That her name not be lost to the memory of men They shot her full of holes, and torpedoed in the end But will the gallant New Carissa rise again? They brought in pyrotechnic kings who knew just what to do "Set her fuel on fire, boys, we'll blow up all the goo!" With good old trusty C-4, and napalm just in case But it flashed and died and the old girl's still in place Now birds are dying rapidly and all the Greenies cry "Can't you kill that stupid ship so the birdies all can fly?" The weather started making up, storm coming, who knows when But will the gallant New Carissa rise again? (Chorus) She then decided to divide, and fore and aft were two The fuel was rushing like a fountain gray into the blue They brought the sturdy tug Sea Victory to do her job Chugging through the greasy oily blob They tried to tow her bow to sea, but Carissa said "No way!" She broke the tow line in a storm and danced into the bay And now her bow and stern both laugh upon the sandy grains To make the gallant New Carissa rise again (Chorus) They called the U S. Navy out, in desperation straits The David R Ray and the Bremerton both fired away They could have sent New Carissa Swiss cheese to the store Them Navy boys should really practice more A last torpedo took her to her grave, or so they say Her stern still sits upon the shore, to this very day Her bow's two miles down they say, but does the story end? Will the gallant New Carissa rise again? (Chorus) |
