I'm looking for a recording, or the music and lyrics, of a song called, "Widow's Walk." I believe it is a Canadian folk song about a woman left behind by a whaling (or other seafaring) man. If anyone can point me to a source for it, I'd appreciate a reply. Thanks!

You are kind of right. The words and music were written by Brendan Nolan, a Dublin man who emigrated to the Montreal area. He has a website where you can order the CD titled "Across the Great Divide". It is a terrific CD with an immigration theme. In the meantime, here are the lyrics.

She stood by the window as the waves crashed the shore
To watch him come home as he had time before

REFRAIN
Carry him home to me,
Break the sea down for him
Carry my love home to me

It's late in the year and the storm winds awaken
To the hardiest of sailors, the sea doesn't beckon

REFRAIN

At their shady cove moorings, the small boats rock gently
Safe from the sea winds, till the new season's plenty

REFRAIN

This room is my refuge, from the toils of the day
It's here I find peace, and it's here I can pray

REFRAIN

If the sea take my love, to his rest in the ocean
God make me a silkie, that I could lay with him.

I'm interested in the last line - a silkie (or selchie) - is a seal, especially one that assumes human form and mates with a human. But they pine for the sea and usually do return to it, leaving behind mate and children.
Mick, if you know Brendan, could you ask him why he chose to have the widow be a silkie - and remaining on dry land?

Philippa, the way I hear that, is:
If my love is lost at sea, I will pray to God and ask Him to turn me into a Silkie so I can lie in the ocean with him.
Blessings,
Barbara

Yep, Barbara, that is it. The whole song revolves around this woman and her worry that her love be home safe to her. Cognizant of the dangers of the sea, she prays that if her love should die at sea she would become a selchie so that she might lay in the sea with him.

All the best,

Mick
