Excuse my ignorance, I know there's a dance called The Siege Of Venice, but what air would you play for it? The times I've had a go at dancing it, I've always been too far gone to remember what was played!! Would you play a jig or a reel or is there a particular air?

Regards Mick Bracken

Siege of Ennis

a jig, I think - in some places people are used to a particular tune and when the band strikes it up they know what to dance - I believe I've danced it to "The Rakes of Mallow", but any jig will do

I've never heard it linked with Venice before. I've always known it as the Siege of Ennis, or, in Irish, Ionsai ny hInse (apologies for lack of fada on the last letter of the first word).

But it's in jig time.

Lhiats,

Bobby Bob.

Thanks Bobby Bob, I used to dance that years ago. Nice to know the real name after all this time.

I always thought it was slower than a regular jig but it was a long time ago so I'm probably wrong.

Bert.

'ny' is 'na' in Irish and there shouldn't be an accent (fada) anyway

Booby Bob, I saw some real strange 'Manx' in the IrTrad-L archives. I'll look up the address later and put it in the Macarónachas thread (if you see it, you'll understand why)

When I first looked at this thread, I expected to read about a big Mudcat gathering in Venice. We could practice the dance there.

It's a long time since I played it, but there is a tune specifically known as'The Siege Of Ennis' and while I have rarely heard it played outside of a dance set, it is a simple tune that I really like. There are other standard tunes for this set, but I would need to look them up.

Regards
John

PS This is a great dance for large numbers of people where the gender mix is unimportant, but it needs a large dance area.

I frequently play a siege on the Hammered Dulcimerat parrish parties and fund raisers for the step dance schools in Syracuse,NY. The Rakes of Mallow is a tune I associate with the Siege but it is clearly a reel the way its danced and played around these parts. I don't play The Rakes so we use Liberty and St. Anne's reel for our set piece. And if I'm in form we may even toss in Golden Slippers as well. The line up is four facing four, the dancers take 2 steps forward 2 steps, and again, 2 to the left, 2 to the right, forward and spin and then repeat, pass between to the next line a start again. I'm sure there are variations for regions and countries. But I can't imagine a jig and reel being used for the same dance. I don't dance as I was born with a bone in my leg and anyone who has heard me play the hammered dulcimer knows I have no rhytymn.

Subject: Tune Add: SIEGE OF ENNIS
From: John in Brisbane

Here's SIEGE OF ENNIS - as I said earlier I believe that it's a great tune to dance to, as well as play. I have fond memories of dancing it 8 abreast at a St Pat's Day Ball in Melbourne, but it was a huge venue.

John
