Subject: Rainbow Quest From: Ronn Gilbert Date: 16 Jan 99 - 01:19 AM I was living in Rochester NY in the mid-60's and used to watch a show on public television (then known as educational television) called RAINBOW QUEST that was hosted by Pete Seeger. I found out years later from Pete's autobiography that this show was on in only a very few markets and for only a short time, so I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. I remember seeing Buffy St Marie, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Mississippi John Hurt, and many others (including a woman who played "You Are My Sunshine" on a balloon) on this show. Does anyone else remember seeing the show? Does anyone know who else performed? Does anyone know if the shows are available on videotape? |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Quest From: Don Meixner Date: 16 Jan 99 - 01:30 AM About 5 years back I copied all the Rainbow Quest tapes available on convenient Beta Video tapes. They are available through the Onondaga Public Library System so I assume they can be bought I have Doc Watson with Fred Price and ??? Howard, The New Lost City Ramblers, The Late Great Grant Rogers, Tom Paxton, Judy Collins, Richard and Mimi farina, Sonnie and Brownie, John Hurt, Hedy West, The Clancys and Tommy Makem, a Puerto Rican band, Bernice Regan, and others. Being on Beta I haven't seen them in a while. Don Meixner |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Quest From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 16 Jan 99 - 04:54 AM They exist, and they used to be listed in Elderly"s cataloge. Unfortunately they have no distributor at the moment, or so Elderly tells me. Your only hope is to find one that never got sold languishing in a store. I would love to get a copy of the one with Mississippi John Hurt. Murray |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Quest From: Tiger Date: 16 Jan 99 - 10:24 AM You can find the tapes (38 of them) at Mabel's Music for $29.00 each. I've seen individual titles elsewhere for $25.00 or so. Try Mabel's at: http://www2.mabels.com/mabels/vestapol.html ....Tiger |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Quest From: rick fielding Date: 16 Jan 99 - 12:20 PM To Don. The missing guy was Clint Howard, a wonderful singer and musical partner with Fiddlin' Fred Price. His version of "Maggie Walker Blues" is one of my favourite pieces of American folk music. |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Quest From: murray@mpce.mq.eu.au Date: 16 Jan 99 - 07:40 PM Thanks Tiger--What a find! I searched all over for them. Rick: I think Clint Howard is a much underrated performer. He and Price both combine well with such diverse people as Doc Watson and Clarence Ashley. Many times his and Price's name don't even appear on the record cover. Murray |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Quest From: Ronn Date: 15 Mar 99 - 12:27 AM Tiger--Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you The Mabel's site is a sensational find! I ordered 4 tapes initially, and they are all wonderful. Seeing Doc Watson at about age 30, Mississippi John a year or two before he died...I felt like a teenager again discovering folk music for the first time. Murray, the Mississippi John Hurt tape also includes old-time banjoist (banjoist?) Paul Cadwell, and also Hedy West. With Pete, they do a "'round the table" exchange, so John only does two songs by himself plus one where he leads all four in a fairly rousing version (!) of "Goodnight Irene". He also tells a story about getting his first guitar. Sparce, but still well worth the price. |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Quest From: Rick Fielding Date: 15 Mar 99 - 12:56 PM Murray, I guess Clint Howard and Fred Price needed an agent! |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Quest From: Ronn Date: 15 Mar 99 - 08:21 PM OK, Rick--point well taken--they are both excellent on this show. But it was seeing Doc Watson that I remembered for 30 years. |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Quest From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 16 Mar 99 - 05:42 AM Yes I bought the John Hurt tape from Mabels. I am happy with it, and Hedy West and Paul Cadwell were pleasant surprises. I saw Hurt playing his two pieces on a Grossman video; but I wanted to see how he reacted with the other people. The video certainly shows that. I think the camera panning away with them all playing Hurt's version of "Goodnight Irene" is almost surrealistic. It looks like the table and chairs are going to float in the air and they will go sailing away. I started another thread called "Hedy West" as a result of seeing her again. It more-or-less asked what she was doing these days. Sandy Paton answered the question to some extent. Click here if you want to find out. The only complaint about Mabels is that they sent me the wrong tape in the first instance and asked me to send it back in exchange for the right one. That added somewhat to the expense of the thing. Ronn, I think Howard and Price have been good every time I have seen them. I have seen videos with them accompanying Clarence Ashley and they fit in with him beautifully. There is no doubt Doc Watson is more special. In fact he is a phenomenon. He more-or-less invented a sound combining blues, hillbilly, (and jazz?). Murray |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Quest From: Ronn Date: 16 Mar 99 - 11:47 PM Fascinating--I ordered 4 different tapes and got an incorrect one also, but correcting the problem was only a matter of making a phone call, and the return postage was negligible. I'm just grateful to have found these tapes at all, I cannot underestimate the impact these shows had on me as a 13-year-old. I discovered Pete Seeger, James Brown, Bob Dylan, and BB King all at the same point in my life, but these tapes are the only part of that series of discoveries that I can relive in my 40's. Did anyone know that James Brown and Pete Seeger have the same birthday? |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Quest From: Hedy West (inactive) Date: 25 Aug 00 - 04:07 AM Dear Mudcat: The announcement/s posted in my name Jan 12 & 19, 2000 were neither written nor posted by me, even though my name was used to sign it/them. I was unaware of both this Mudcat.org posting, and of a parallel one at the site "HedyWest@Hotmail" which was set up by an enthusiastic young friend whose judgement failed him. I was dumbfounded that he was writing and receiving mail as if he were I. The information posted is thoroughly incorrect. I am extremely sorry that people must have been misled. A provisional project begun with that young friend at Larkspur displeased me extremely when I became aware of its poor technical quality, and of my young friend¹s misleading and hucksteresque approach. Larkspur will not produce or sell my recordings. I am in the process of rewriting liner notes and digitally remastering them with care at Masterwork Recording, Inc in Philadelphia. When they are ready I plan to issue them on TraceChain Recordings. TraceChain¹s website will be: www.TraceChain.com/ A bright part of this false start has been seeing the interest and activity of the readers of Mudcat Forum. Best wishes to you all, Hedy West 440 Righters Mill Road Penn Valley, Pennsylvania 19072-1441 HedyWest@aol.com (& for a while longer: HedyWest@hotmail.com) |

Subject: Hedy West From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Aug 00 - 04:58 AM Boy, I don't know what to think. I bought a couple of CD's of Hedy's albums, at eighteen bucks a pop. The music was wonderful, but the price was high and the recording quality was very amateur - and the two albums were short and would have fit on one CD. I've asked Dick Greenhaus to make inquiries and get to the bottom of this. Hedy's music is wonderful and should be preserved. I paid a premium price for a couple of pretty sloppy CD's. Click here for another thread on Hedy West. -Joe |

Subject: RE: Rainbow Quest From: Sandy Paton Date: 25 Aug 00 - 06:45 PM Hedy: Do you still have that lovely old Washburn guitar that you got from Barry Olivier (or was it someone else in Berkeley)? The one that used to belong to me? Someday I'd like to get together with you so I could play it once again. I'll be down in Philadelphia around the first of September (family wedding -- ugh!). Maybe Caroline and I will try to get in touch with you then, although the schecule right now is a bit "iffy." Thanks for the new address information. TraceChain doesn't work yet, but I'll keep watching it. Sandy |

I'd love for you and Caroline to walk right in, set right down. I'll make a pallet on the floor if that's to your taste. Do, come. Yes, TraceChain.com is as of now just a registered website. You're a diligent detective. Hedy |
