Subject: Lyr Add: THE BODHRAN SONG (Brian O'Rourke) From: AndreasW Date: 11 Jan 99 - 03:21 AM THE BODHRÁN SONG as performed by Tim Dennehy on a CD called 20 Famous Irish Ballads Oh I am a year old kid I'm worth scarcely fifteen quid. I'm the kind of beast you might well look down on But my value will increase At the time of my decease For when I grow up I want to be a bodhrán. If you kill me for my meat You won't find me very sweet. Your palate I'm afraid I'll soon turn sour on. Ah but if you do me in For the sake of my thick skin You'll find I make a tasty little bodhrán. Now my parents Bill and Nan, They do not approve my plan To become a yoke for every yob to pound on Ah but I would sooner scamper With a bang than with a whimper And achieve reincarnation as a bodhrán. I look forward to the day When I leave off eating hay And become a drum to entertain a crowd on And I'll make my presence felt With each well-delivered belt As a fully qualified and licensed bodhrán. And 'tis when I'm killed and cured My career will be assured I'll be a skin you'll see no scum nor scour on But with studs around my rim I'll be sound in wind and limb And I'll make a dandy, handy little bodhrán. Oh my heart with joy expands When I dream of far-off lands And consider all the streets that I will sound on And I pity my poor ma Who has never seen a Fleadh Or indulged in foreign travel as a bodhrán. For a hornpipe or a reel A dead donkey has no feel Or a horse or cow or sheep that has its shroud on And you can't join in a jig If you're a former grade A pig But you can wallop out the lot if you're a bodhrán. So if e'er you're feeling low To a session you should go And bring me there to exercise an hour on. You can strike a mighty thump On my belly, back or rump But I thank you if you'd wait till I'm a bodhrán. When I dedicate my hide, I'll enhance the family pride And tradition is a thing I won't fall down on For I'll bear a few young bucks Who'll inherit my good looks And be proud to know their old one is a bodhrán. And I don't think I'll much mind When I've left himself behind For the critter can no longer turn the power on For with a celtic ink design Tattooed on my behind I can be a very sexy little bodhrán Now I think you've had enough Of this rubbishy old guff So I'll put a sudden end to my wee amhrán And quite soon my bloody bleat Will become a steady beat When I start my new existence as a bodhrán. |

Subject: RE: LYRADD:The Bodhrán Song From: Martin Ryan Date: 11 Jan 99 - 06:30 AM Written by Brian O'Rourke - author of some other very funny songs. Most famous is "Chantal du Champignon" (or thereabouts) - a 20 minute long account of a male mid-life crisis. This now has true cult status - with a loose group who meet twice a year to celebrate it. The only requirement for membership is the ability to sing at leat one verse! Regards |

Subject: RE: LYRADD:The Bodhrán Song From: paddymac Date: 28 Apr 02 - 09:30 PM I've got this song on a CD by a Dub named Seamus Moore. I did it for St Paddy's about five years ago, and even though we liked it, it seemed to go right over the audience. That's a problem at times, if your audience doesn't have a sufficient background to appreciate the nuances of a song. I think it's a self-produced disk, but I'll check. Several other funny songs on there as well, including "Pakistani Pat", the story of a somewhat bellicose son of an Irish mother and a Pakistani father. |

Subject: RE: LYRADD:The Bodhrán Song From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 29 Apr 02 - 06:40 AM The tune is the one used for the "Sive" song, the chorus of which goes "And they murdered lovely Sive...". Was it "The bright silvery light of the moon" in an earlier life? Similar to "All for me grog" alright. Regards |

Subject: Lyr Add: TALKING BODHRÁN FOLK BLUES From: GUEST,macca Date: 30 Apr 02 - 06:46 AM Great song which I'll probably try to pinch when nobody's looking - As an interested party when it comes to these diabolical drums, I was messing about the other day at our regular session and came up with the following - just rattle out any old rhythm you like, but it helps if you can vary it (deliberately) as you go along. PS - you heard it first here, so if there's any royalties going...... PPS - Probably works best in a fake amurricane accent with (in my case) a Scots background. Pretend you're Lonnie Donnigan which is where the original idea came from..

Subject: RE: LYRADD:The Bodhrán Song From: Tattie Bogle Date: 16 Jul 04 - 07:23 PM I got the words of this off Mudcat a few years ago, but no tune either. Having read it over a couple of times and got the meter, the tune that came into my head was "All for me grog" to which I have been singing it since, and it fits quite well. Sorry if it's not the right tune! I would agree that it is of specialist interest and rather long if you sing the complete complement of verses - unless you are singing it to a crowd of bodhran players! BTW Ian McCalman of the McCalmans has written a song called "Bodhrans and Banjos" which pokes fun at both of these much maligned instruments. it's on their latest CD, "Tangled Web". |
