Subject: Lyr Add: ROSIE UP IN MOORE STREET (Pete St. John) From: John in Brisbane Date: 03 Jun 99 - 07:58 PM Here you go Bill.
Regards
ROSIE UP IN MOORE STREET Oh Rosie up in Moore Street, tipplin' neath her shawl, The old ball of malt and the chaser, Oh Rosie she was neat, ah the queen of all the street, Cos Rosie was the dealers' darlin'. Nancy balls and bulls-eyes, licorice sticks and plums, Credit till the (Pond/Palm?) doors open, She'd never see a wrong, trade an apple for a song, Cos Rosie was the dealers' darlin'. Chorus Now Rosie saw the changes from carriages to cars, The times when the street was a haven, A social looking-glass for the toffs and working class, And Rosie was the dealers' darlin'. Chorus Now Dublin never changes and Dublin never cries, And dealin' is a trade worth savin', Ans Rosie was the queen of the whole Dublin scene, Cos Rosie was the dealers' darlin'. Chorus x 2^^

Subject: RE: Lyrics: Rosy Up on Moore Street From: Boston Bill Date: 05 Jun 99 - 11:47 AM Hey John- Your great! Thanks a lot. Where is Brisbane? Bill |

Subject: RE: Lyrics: Rosy Up on Moore Street From: John in Brisbane Date: 06 Jun 99 - 06:54 AM I thought you'd never ask. Brisbane is the third largest city in terms of population in Australia and is in the sub-tropics. We're in our first week of winter, with a temperature range of 14C - 23C about average at the moment. You'll find a gory reference to Brisbane's past as a convict colony in the DT in the song Moreton Bay, plus a fairly romanticised version later last century in Brisbane Ladies. The famous beaches of the Gold Coast/Surfers Paradise are about 70 km South and the Sunshine Coast about 120 Km North. I love it here!

Subject: RE: Lyrics: Rosy Up on Moore Street From: Boston Bill Date: 08 Jun 99 - 11:40 PM John- It sounds like an ideal spot! We in Boston are in our 2nd day of a heat wave. Temps around 95 F. Martin- Thanks and I agree w/ "pawn" for sure. John and Martin- What about "tipper" beneath the shawl? (as in whiskey flask) Thanks all. |
|
Subject: RE: Lyrics: Rosy Up on Moore Street From: Martin _Ryan Date: 09 Jun 99 - 04:37 AM "to tipple" is to drink. So..." tippling beneath her shawl" is just a surreptitious sip from a bottle tucked inot her clothes! Regards |

Subject: DT Corr: Rosie Up in Moore Street (Pete St. John) From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Aug 09 - 09:38 PM Good Old John did a good transcription, and that's what was included in the Digital Tradition. But Big Mick gave me a Pete St. John songbook, and it has a few corrections: ROSIE UP IN MOORE STREET (Pete St. John) CHORUS Rosie up in Moore Street, tipplin' neath her shawl, The ould ball of malt and the chaser, Oh Rosie she was neat, ah, the Queen of all the street, For Rosie was the Dealers' Darlin'. Nancy Balls and Bulls-Eyes, Liquorice Sticks and plums, Credit till the pawn doors open, She'd never see you wrong, trade an apple for a song, And Rosie was the Dealers' Darlin'. Rosie saw the changes from carriages to cars, The times when the street was a haven, A social looking-glass for the toffs and working class, And Rosie was the Dealers' Darlin'. Dublin never changes and Dublin never dies, And dealin' is a trade worth savin', Ans Rosie was the Queen of the whole Dublin scene, For Rosie was the Dealers' Darlin'.
