Check out Folk Song USA by J Lomax. Of course there are other books. If you can't find a copy I'll type out verses. There are many versions. Lomax has 9 verses, but I've seen more. Let me know if I can help further.

My grandmother used to sing a song that talked about "combed his hair (head?) with a wagon wheel and died with a toothache in his heel". Does anyone know the whole song? Any help would be appreciated.

The whole song?? I think it has about 80 verses or so! Friends of mine do a version with 16 verses, and I have a tape (somewhere) of them singing it. If no one else can come up with more, I will start looking for it for you.

My Dad used to sing a sort of politically incorrect verse:

"Old Dan Tucker was a fine old booster
He used to ride a bob-tailed rooster
He rode him up a Hickory steeple
And there he found some colored people
Some were black & some were blacker
Some so black, they chewed terbacker."
