Subject: Jim Bridger From: Date: 18 Dec 98 - 09:32 PM I'm looking for the lyrics to a song I used to sing as a Boy Scout many years ago. It was about mountain man Jim Bridger and it went something like this..."let's drink to old Jim Bridger and raise our glasses high, as long as there's a USA don't let his memory die..." If anyone has these lyrics or knows a better place to find them, I'd be much obliged. My e-mail address is teburns@mailexcite.com. Thanks!!! Tom. |

Subject: Lyr Req: JIM BRIDGER (Leon Payne) From: GUEST,Jerry Date: 13 Aug 04 - 02:26 AM There is a site on the web that has many of the Johnny Horton songs on it. Not sure how to make the following addy into a hyperlink here so you may have to cut and paste. http://www.lyrics007.com/Johnny%20Horton%20Lyrics/Jim%20Bridger%20Lyrics.html (the link maker made this...)http://www.lyrics007.com/Johnny%20Horton%20Lyrics/Jim%20Bridger%20Lyrics.html Anyway here are the lyrics. Once there was a mountain man who couldn't write his name Yet he deserves the front row seat in History's Hall of Fame He forgot more about the Indians than we will ever know He spoke the language of the Sioux the Black Foot and the Crow (Let's drink to old Jim Bridger yes lift your glasses high) As long as there's the USA don't let his memory die (That he was making history never once occured to him) But I doubt if we'd been here if it weren't for men like Jim [ ac.guitar ] He spoke with General Custer and said listen Yellow Hair The Sioux are the great nation so treat 'em fair and square Sit in on their war councils, don't laugh away their pride But Custer didn't listen at Little Big Horn Custer died ((Let's drink to old Jim Bridger yes lift your glasses high) As long as there's the USA don't let his memory die (That he was making history never once occured to him) But I doubt if we'd been here if it weren't for men like Jim There's poems and there's legends that tell of Carson's fame Yet compared to Jim Bridger Kit was civilized and tame These words are straight from Carson's lips if you place that story by him If there's a man who knows this God forsaken land it's Jim ((Let's drink to old Jim Bridger yes lift your glasses high) As long as there's the USA don't let his memory die (That he was making history never once occured to him) But I doubt if we'd been here if it weren't for men like Jim |

Subject: RE: Jim Bridger From: JohnInKansas Date: 13 Aug 04 - 03:37 AM If you want to sing about the man, you might be interested in the couple of clippings from his obituary at the Smithsonian Taylor Collection Pictures of the clippings, near the top of the page, but scroll down a little for the "translations." Seems as how he liked Shakespeare. John |
