Subject: Lyr Add: TEN LITTLE TOES (Barrie Roberts) From: Steve Parkes Date: 16 Dec 98 - 03:57 AM Hey Webby, I thought it was a US Civil War song! Way back when RH had a b-i-i-ig hit with it (early '70s?) my old musical pal Barrie Roberts got so fed up of hearing it that he wrote new words. At least there's nothing wrong with the tune! TEN LITTLE TOES Two little boys had two little toys, Each had a cross-cut saw. Gaily they played, sawing away, and they ripped and they tore. Then poor little Jack had a fearful mishap As he hacked off his left-hand leg! He hobbled abaout, screaming and shouting, Till his young playmate said: "Did you think I would leave you hobbling?" And he hacked off his right leg too! "Climb up here, Jack, a bit of cobbling And you'll be just as good as new! When we grow up we'll both be lumberjacks And we'll cut down the trees in rows. Do you think you will ever remember When you had ten little toes?" Long years passed, lumberjacks at last Both of the boys became, Sawing away until the fateful day When the forest was all aflame. Joe got caught, struggled and fought, But he could not get away! He'd resigned himself to a fiery death, When he heard Jack say: "Did you think I would leave you frying?" And he hacked off Joe's legs too! "Climb up here Joe and let's be flying, For my tin feet will see us through! Can't you see, Joe, I'm all a-trembling - Do you think it's the fire's glow? No, Joe - I'm remembering When I had ten little toes!" Enjoy! Steve Steve, the line break tag is |

Subject: RE: Two little Boys...had two little toys From: Ewan McV Date: 16 Dec 98 - 04:16 AM I've a notion good old Rolfie claimed it as a Boer War song. I have I know read a clear account of when the song was written and by who, but oddly the relevant brain cells have been wiped clean by some unseen agency. |

Subject: RE: Two little Boys...had two little toys From: Big Mick Date: 16 Dec 98 - 08:47 AM In what backwater, uncivilized part of the world would they have such uncouth, ill bred, and untrained clods that they would not have heard of Rolf Harris. I canna believe that this place actually exists......... All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Two little Boys...had two little toys From: Benson Date: 16 Dec 98 - 09:48 AM Excuse my ignorance........I heard the tune in the late 60's from a fellow who was at one time a member of a group known as "Knob lick upper 10,000" ......I got married in the 70's and was forced to spend my time raising kids and listening to Barry Manilow and .....Well some of you know.... Rolfe Harris...???? Didn't he have something to do with tying up kangaroos???....Memory fades with age.....Maybe he was the guy in the movie "A man called Horse".......Heck!!! I've been away.... |

Subject: RE: Two little Boys...had two little toys From: Dale Rose Date: 16 Dec 98 - 10:35 AM Well, I would like to put at least one part of the discussion to rest. This is not a Rolf Harris original. It goes back at least to 1962, when it was recorded by The Country Gentlemen on their Bluegrass at Carnegie Hall album, available on CD as Hollywood 113~~it was originally released on Starday. I know who Rolf Harris is, and have heard a couple of his songs, but have never heard him do this. Gene has posted the words to the CG version in one of the earlier threads and early on in this thread, he pointed to the url where you can hear their version in its entirety. It is possible that listening to it might give some of you a fresh outlook on the subject. As to its origins, it certainly is older than 1962, I will put it on my list of things to find out! |
