Subject: RE: Yank Rachel... From: Art Thieme Date: 08 Dec 98 - 01:57 AM Yank Rackel was the mandolin player behind Sleepy John Estes on many of his old 78 records. He was also on the recordings made in the 1960s when both men's skills had diminished and they made some albums for Bob Koester's Delmar Records in Chicago. (Latel the "Delmar" name had to be changed to "Delmark" as another label had that name already (as I remember it). CARL MARTIN was the mandolin player with Howard Armstrong and Ted Bogan. I don't think Yank ever worked with Howard Armstrong. But I never did see that film of LOUIE BLUIE so I sure might be wrong. But don't think so. I had a ball working for a week with MARTIN, BOGAN AND ARMSTRONG. We were put up in a farmhouse outside Rockford, Illinois and they played cards and verbally tore into each other for that whole week. (Always good natured in spite of diggin' into each other real good. It was hilarious.) Art |

Subject: RE: Yank Rachel... From: Brian Hoskin Date: 08 Dec 98 - 02:53 AM James 'Yank' Rachell was born in Brownsville, Tennessee, 16 March 1910 and died 9 April 1997. As well as mandolin he also played guitar, harmonica and violin. He worked on the L&N railroad as a trackhand in his early years, whilst supplementing his income playing for house parties with, among others Willie Hambone Newbern. He first recorded with Sleepy John Estes in 1929, he also played and recorded with John Lee Sonny Boy Williamson and with Dan Smith. He recorded under his own name for labels such as Victor, Vocalion, and Banner, and between 1938 and 1941 he recorded 24 titles for Bluebird. Despite this he was unable to make a living as a fulltime musician and often worked as a farmer. He returned to a career in music to play with Sleepy John Estes and Hammie Nixon during the blues revival of the early 1960s. Brian |

Subject: RE: Yank Rachel... From: Earl Date: 08 Dec 98 - 10:18 AM Not long before he died Yank Rachel recorded three songs with John Sebastian and The J-Band released on the CD "I Want My Roots." "Divin' Duck" is one of them. Sounds pretty good. |
