LULLABY OF LONDON
(Shane MacGowan)

As (C) I walked (F) down by the (C) river(F)side one (C) evening (F) in the (C) spring (C)
Heard a (C) long gone (F) song form (C) days gone (F) by blown (C) in on (F) the great North (C) Wind (C)
Though there (F) is no lonesome (C) corncrake's cry of (Am)sorrow and de(F)light
You can (C) hear the (F) cars and the (C) shouts from (F) bars and the (C) laughter (F) and the (C) fights (C)

May (F) the ghosts that howled round the (C) house at night never (Am) keep you from your (F) sleep
May they (C) all sleep (F) tight down in (C) hell to(F)night or (C) wherever they may (C) be (C)

As I walked on with a heavy heart then a stone danced on the tide
And the song went on though the lights were gone and the North Wind gently sighed
And an evening breeze coming from the East that kissed the riverside
So I pray now child that you sleep tonight when you hear this lullabye

May the wind that blows from haunted graves never bring you misery
May the angels bright watch you tonight and keep you while you sleep

The End!

Hi, The Fenian,

Where did you get that one?
Reminds me of when I lived in Forest Gate as a child.
We were right across the road from 'The Eagle and Child' and us kids had the front room upstairs. Saturday nights we used to sit at the window and watch the drunks (sorry, happy revellers) going home at chucking out time.

Bert

Hey Bert
Know the place well My wife and I worked at Whipps Cross in Leytonstone for 20 odd years. We'd help with the stitching up after the fights!
Regards Baz

The Anne Lister Lullaby I just posted to DIck and Susan's Christmas Gift Thread, is a bit different even though it starts off sounding like a Rockaby baby fairy tale standard. I love the last line:
"Rockaby baby until it is morning,
"You'll find life's not quite like this, this is a warning."
Blessings,
Barbara

Lullaby of London is of course a Shane MacGowan song, a breat balladeer despite the voice.

Shane's lyrics, I find, are always quite astounding and he is definitly one of the best songwriter's of his era in my mind(Even if he is a drunk).
