Subject: what is your audio system? From: takeo Date: 15 Nov 98 - 11:12 PM what kind of audio system do you use for listening folk music? mine is amp: quad44+606 speaker: quad esl(monoral) player: kenwood kp1100 + denon103 cd: denon, tape: teac, md: kenwood, etc. i think this fit for vocal music with simple accompaniment. especially old columbia, prestige, vanguard, etc. lp has very good analog sound quality. let me hear your opinion. -takeo |

Subject: RE: what is your audio system? From: BSeed Date: 16 Nov 98 - 02:13 AM Well, Takeo-san, in the living room is an old Pioneer stereo receiver with a Dual 1215 turntable by United Audio, a pair of Scott S-20 speakers, an inexpensive dual dubbing cassette player and a portable Panasonic CD player attached. I rarely use the turntable, then only to tape some of my old LPs. The tape deck gets a bit more use: my wife tapes her classical CDs (mostly Mozart) to play in the car. I do most of my listening to CDs either on the player in my Mac or on a cheap Casio stereo fake component system above it (it looks like a stacked, matched component system from the front, but a glance at the side shows you it's all one piece, except the speakers can be seperated a few feet, but not unplugged). Both sound fine for me: they cover the dynamic range of most folk music (I'll admit they don't produce the top harmonics, but I don't know if my ears can still sense them, anyway). I assume that your system is mono because your tastes run to stuff recorded in the 20's, long before stereo, Takeo. Am I right? If I could afford it, I might buy a top of the line surround sound system for the concert hall experience, but I'd rather spend what money I have on instruments and CDs. --seed |

Subject: RE: what is your audio system? From: Bo Date: 16 Nov 98 - 02:40 AM I have to admit that my stereo system is also in the 'it works' category. I just wont spend money on components when I can spend money on CDs. I have a Samsung really chinsy system, good mission speakers (4) and 200+ CDs. I love singing and I need good speakers but I just dont really care about stereo bells and whistles. Bo |

Subject: RE: what is your audio system? From: Dan Keding Date: 16 Nov 98 - 10:15 PM Mine is old, very old. The cd player needs a tap on the front cover to get it started and one of the speakers lost all its foam and is held to the frame by duct tape. I have an old turn table (a must if you're over forty and love folk music) and an old Marantz amp/receiver. The only really good piece is an Aiwa tape deck model AD F810. I spend too much money on books, instruments and recordings to upgrade right now. Can't have it all I guess. Dan |

Subject: RE: what is your audio system? From: Ted from Australia Date: 16 Nov 98 - 11:18 PM I have Bose System X speakers (the small ones with a subwoofer)Yahamah Rx500 Tuner/amp(100 japaneseWatts per channel) MarantzSD 820 cassette deck (old bit i can adjust the inpiput and output levels and record direct from microphones) Yahamah CDX240 CD (due for an upgrade)Pioneer belt drive turntable. When I wanrt to dub tapes (only for use in the car you understand ;-))i hook in my Tascam Porta 2 four track tape deck( which is a part of my PA I don't want to get into the whole Hi FI thing but I do think that if you spend a lot of time listening to music (as I do) as well as playing it,you shold have the best system that you can possibly afford. Mine has been built up over quite a few years Start bu upgrading to some REALLY good speakers ( take what you budgeted for the whole system and just buy speakers) and work back. Regards Ted
