I am currently researching singers at the Yale Hoots 1952-1970's THere was a singer Ann Bird or Byrd who sang there. She was from NYC and rode a motorcycle. At one time sang with Margaret Wagner. Later she was involved with "Friends of old time music" Possibly reported to have died of O.D. Does any one know what became of her.

I decided to look up your past messages and see what else you might have writeen about Yale. I just found the Ann Bird post. As I wrote earlier, I have a recording of her singing with Margaret Wagner. I didn't recall that she rode a motorcycle and I remember her living in Connecticut, perhaps Putnam. I remember her telling me that she had taught Mike Seeger to play the Autoharp. I had absolutely no idea that she used drugs but that could have been my own naivete.

Hi sourdough; WOW I haven't been checking Mudcat to often, But just checked today. Were you at the old Hoots Yale 1993-1974 + - ? I was there w/ camera and old Ampro tape recorder. Have about 60 c-90 tapes of the Hoots. I did sing "Silver Dager" with Margaret. But alas no recordings of Margaret or Ann Bird. You mention writing earlier about them but I didn't pick up on it. Yes she did ride a motorcycle I have photos of her on it. Probably around 1963 or so .At that time I believe she was living in NYC I believe she knew Marty Brennan, Chas Barton, Ian Buchannan [Has since died]. I am attempting to find Margaret Wagner. Where is she?? . Yes we are now having Reunions of old people who sang at the Hoot', about 2 times a year. In fact I am now in the process of making copies of 2 C-90 tapes of the one we had in May. Is there some way I can get a copy of what you have of Ann and margaret singing?? Tapes? or did they actually make a recording? I will send blank tapes and some of the copies I have of the Hoot material in return Please contact me by E-mail alsch@worldnet.att.net I will keep checking mudcat also Allan

Were you the person that sang the version of SIlver Dagger that cracked everyone up? AS I recall, it had a new last verse you or perhaps Margaret had fashined, sometiing like, "So let's all take out our silver daggers, and plunge them into our lily-white breasts..."I forget the rest but it was funny, I think because you took out a plastic knife. The memory of all of this is foggy.

I was there from 1958-60 probably. Will Reimann was another regular. He usually sang, "Bow and Balance to Me". There was someone who often sang "Andrew Martin" and a woman with a gorgeous voice who sang, "My Johnny's Gone to Hilo". Bob Engman's favorite was "Sail Away, Ladies" which he frailed on his banjo.

I don't recall what I wrote to you but the tape I have is of a radio broadcast in a series I hosted at WYBC. I can send you the orginal tape if you will duplicate it for me onto a cassette. I no longer have a reel to reel and the tape, now forty years old, needs to be handled by someone who knows how to treat brittle tape.

There actually is a recording on which Ann Bird can be found, though it is fairly scarce. It is a 1961(?) compilation called "The Folksingers of Washington Square", on Continental Records. Also on the LP: Sandy Bull, Logan English, Bruce Langhorne, Martin Lorin, and Molly Scott. Bird is featured most prominently on "Wanderin' Boy" where she solos, accompanying herself on autoharp, and on "The Sailor Boy", where she appears with Logan English. She appears on three other tracks as well.
