We have a duo - basically harp, fiddle and vocal but we sometimes swap for other instruments also. Can you suggest any good songs in the Celtic theme suitable for harp accompaniement for: Weddings Christening Anniversary Christmas

Lucia, tell us which Celtic songs are already in your repertoire for these occasions, so we can suggest different ones. Alice

Hi,

If you do a search within the last year for "Celtic wedding" or "Irish wedding". Those probably aren't the exact thread titles but there were a few with heaps of suggestions ...... then you could just work out which ones would suit your instrumentation.

Although not strictly a celtic song, you could easily celtify Renaissance. It is a very nice anniversary song (waltz, actually) particularly if the couple is middle aged. Valdy did a version years ago but I can't recall who wrote it. Probably his buddy the singing dentist but don't quote me on that. For older folks, "When We Were Sweet Sixteen" or "Now I'm Sixty-Four" might be nice if a little sad. Lots of folks like When You And I Were Young Maggie, but it too isn't strictly celtic.

For weddings, I assume that you are playing the reception. If so, play some real uptempo Irish and Cape Breton wedding reel/jig medleys. A wedding reception is no time to be standing around listening to ballads. It's heel and toe time.:)

For wakes, a few Scottish airs or pastorals might be in order. And I am sure there must be loads of Irish tunes for the harp that would be useful. I've always thought a slow version of Farewell The Creeks or O' A' the Airts the Wind Can Blaw sound suitably mournful at a wake or funeral but they are then generally played on the GHB.

I hate to rain on your thread, but I'm wondering if this will post. Many of us can only reach the Mudcat intermittently. (See "help" threads) I have been unable to start a new thread, so I thought I'd attempt to add to one. Max, if you're out there, tell us what you need. I was so distraught when I thought the Mudcat was gone! I'll send money if that will help!

From: The Shambles

This is probably not to be sung at a wedding and not to be take too seriously but it is my latest baby and belongs to all of you at the Mudcat, for it was you who inspired it. It was one of those songs that appear to write themselves. It's out of my 'minimilist' period and has two chords, the 1st and 7th. The sub-title is..... A Single Man's Second Thoughts.

Standing At The Altar

I would like to say I love you but I just don't know

I would like a love that flowers but this just won't grow

I'm counting up the hours, they run so slow

I would like to say I'll miss you but you just won't go

Chorus

I just can't seem to see the wood from the trees

You won't find me at my best at moments like these

It's not the ground that's shaking it's just my knees

I'm standing at the altar, Lord help me please

I say that there's no water at the bottom of this well

It maybe smells of roses but I've lost my sense of smell

I would like to say it's special but I can't tell

I would like to say it's heaven but it feels like hell

chorus

I'm just try to tell you everythings gone wrong

But you just carry on singing that same old song

You don't know what you've got until it's gone

I know what I got and I know it don't belong

Chorus

They say that a good woman may turn water into wine

I think maybe somebody must have left the cork in mine

All the things you're saying only come out as a whine

But when you're far away, you will sound just fine

Chorus

For Christenings, there are a lot of good lullabyes. We had a thread on this a while back, search for it in the forum and you'll get some great ideas. My favorite for a Christening is Bidh Clann Ulaidh. You can customize it by writing your own verses about family names, and singing them in English, to give a sense of the lineage the baby comes from. The song is on a Katherine Anne McPhee CD, or if you're interested I could try to create a MIDI file (no promises of sucess).

For a wedding reception, 'Sí do mhaimeo í is supposed to be popular in Ireland. It's a rousing song, a lot of fun to sing, that you can learn from Altan's Harvest Storm. I had an Irish teacher help me with the pronounciation and can e-mail you phonetic lyrics if you want. Star of the County Down would also be good for a wedding.

For Christmas, the Chieftans did a Christmas album ("Bells of Dublin" maybe) with some good songs (most are traditional, although my husband's favorite is Jackson Browne's rendition of "The St. Stephen's Day Murders")

Good luck!

I refreshed four threads on the wedding topic yesterday and tried to post here, but 'lost' the Mudcat in mid-posting.

The other threads are starting to drop off the list now, so if anyone in the future wants to do a forum search, here are the titles and initial information.

For more Christmas songs, try a search of the database using @xmas. For another website, go to:

For a Christening, I like "Morning Has Broken". For Anniversary, "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes", "When You And I Were Young, Maggie", "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen", "My Love is Like a Red Red Rose".
