Hi
I'm looking for the words, music, artist for song I heard a long time ago - early 70's - I think its called Cursed Anna.

Its a folk/traditional song some of the lyrics are below.

As i was going homeward in the early morning light
leaving far behind the prision where i'd spent the night
With no idea of what I'd done or why they'd punished me
feeling none the less relieved and grateful to be free

The path lead to a woodland far behind a rusted gate
I knew it was a shortcut if I kept on going straight
but then like out of nowhere this old wisened man
appeared holding high his one hand while the other stroked his beard.

Can any one help?

Ta

Mike

Dear Mike I might be entirely wrong on this but I think it was written by Colin Wilson who lives in Exeter, Devon, UK. He certainly used to sing it a lot and it was on his album. Does it continue 'Beware the cursed Anna's stare'? I don't remember any more but used to hear Colin singing it oiften.

Subject: Lyr Add: BALLAD OF CURSED ANNA (Jonathan Kelly)
From: Alan of Australia
Date: 04 Nov 98 - 05:17 AM

G'day,
Here you are:-

The Ballad Of Cursed Anna

(Jonathan Kelly)

As I was walking homeward in the early morning light
Leaving far behind the prison where I'd spent the night
With no idea of what I'd done or why they'd punished me
But feeling nonetheless relieved and grateful to be free.

My path led through a woodland far behind a rusted gate
I knew it was a shortcut if I kept my walking straight
But then, like out of nowhere, this old wizened man appeared
Holding high his one hand while the other stroked his beard.

"Beware the cursed Anna's stare", this warning did he bring
"No-one makes it through this wood, going out as they came in!"

"But a change is what I'm looking for", I told the sad old man
And bidding him a last farewell into the wood I ran
I ran till I came to the river where I stopped to bathe my feet
And that is where I smelled her perfume delicate and sweet.

I stood up and I turned around and there in front of me
Stood a beautiful woman who simply stared at me
And then I knew it was all true what this old man had advised
"You must be Anna", I said, as I looked into her eyes.

And then we came together in a passionate embrace
I felt my body weaken and my heart begin to race
And when at last the kissing stopped I saw to my alarm
This woman had turned into a young girl in my arms.

I heard her childish laughter as she vanished through the trees
I turned back to the river, my reflection for to see
And down there in the water saw exactly as I feared
To my horror I'd turned into an old man with a beard.

For seven long years I've waited by this gate, wishing that I could die
But that can never happen till some other young man comes by
I know that I must warn him to go round some other way
But hope that, like most men of his age, he won't believe what old men say.

The tune will have to wait another few days.

Cheers,
Alan

Hi,

I was lent a CD the other day by the aforementioned Alan of Oz. He told me I'd probably like it, (which I did)..... he finished the sentence with the words.... "and while you're at it any chance of writing out the tune?" What a chancer!!**grin**

anyway.... I'd never heard of this before... great little song.... and here's the tune. Let me know if you need the guitar chords, (it's in Gm).

If you have the guitar chords it would be great. I sing abit and have a friend who plays guitar. If I can give him the chords he will have no excuse. He will have to learn it.

Once again many thanks

I'm re recording this old track and it will shortly be available via MP3, I'll let you know if you'd like me to put it up.

I actually use a baritone guitar, tuned to B E A D F# B, and play it with the chord shapes:

Ami..G...Emi...F

I'm working on getting the music published in some form or other, but that will have to be privately done otherwise it will offend copyrights.

Lastly, the original record has been re released on CD and is available from Amazon.co.uk @:

I dated an Anna for awhile. She had been around the block with, um, quite a few musicians over the years. Got a lot of songs written about her, most kind of bittersweet. Has been settled down with a once well-known songwriter (and wild man) for a good fifteen years now.

And that's my Anna. I think of her fondly. No curses please, we're Canadian.

Kelly's RCA albums Twice Around the Houses and Wait Till They Change the Backdrop have been reissued not long since on one CD; should be available from the usual retailers like Amazon and so on (Bgo - Beat Goes on B00005M0W2).

Dear Pussicat..don't steal it, buy it!

If you can tell me where I can buy the Jonathan Kelly LP on Parlophone Harvey I would buy it! I've been looking for thirty years and haven't come across a copy yet. I have all four RCA LP's and numerous singles (except the PYE releases as Jon Ledingham) including his very first as part of the Boomerangs.

My intention wasn't to 'steal' anything but as the LP doesn't appear in the second hand market I can only assume that those that are lucky enough to own the LP want to hang onto to it. As it's not available on CD my only other alternative is to obtain a 'copy' from a fellow fan. Unless of course you can suggest any alternative.

Wow, you've made my day.

I used to listen to this when I was a teenager - I had no other music except an old tape recorder and a load of bootleg tapes from a friend of my mums.

I listened to them over and over again but never knew who wrote it or what it was called.

I searched the internet when I lost the tape a couple of months ago.

Thanks

Wow!

Isn't it a great thing this internet?

I've been searching for this song for years - at least 20!

I remember a friend had it in the early 70's and it got kinda' stuck in my head, but could never remember who it was by, or all the lyrics and here it turns up at last.

Thanks everyone!

And I thought I was the only nut case who kept thinking of this song. Just surfing the net and the idea of searching the line "as I was walking homeward in the early morning light" came into my head and here we are, sad init.

Do you all think we were on the same space ship.

I first heard this song about 25 years ago and have always wondered where I can get a copy.

Thanks guys

was taught this song by a friend of mine in the early 1970's but have never actually heard a recorded version and didn't know who wrote it. Was searchin out the chords for it on the old geetar this mornin' and decided to see if I could find out more about it. I could only remember the first two verses and the chorus. Really pleased to find so much info on line. Now I can play the thing all the way thru and annoy the kids with a morality tale at the same time.

Here's a strange thing. I first heard this played on Radio 1 on a Sunday morning programme. The DJ who introduced it was......... Noel Edmunds. I still have the recording on tape somewhere. Great song.

Enjoying the current folk revival and listening to Mike Harding more during the last 2 years probably caused this tune to come to mind. Searched through some old cassettes kept of radio recordings in '70s and found it with intro by John "Dancing Jack" Peel. Hoping to get it transferred to CD.

I WAS LENT THIS ALBUM BY A WORK COLLEAGUE AT MY FIRST JOB AS AN AUDIT CLERK IN ARNOLD, NOTTINGHAM. THIS WOULD BE AROUND 1975 OR 1976. I AM SO THRILLED THAT SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE REMEMBERED IT AS I HAVE, ALHTOUGH I HAD FORGOTTEN SOME OF THE LYRICS. I AM GOING TO TRY TO DOWNLOAD THE SONG AND ALBUM.

I started to learn this song 13 years ago after being dumped by ( and mentally tattered)by a young woman called Anna (who is still on the folk circuit!)but the bitterness wore off before I had mastered it and I discarded it, maybe I ought to revisit it with different eyes, thanks for flagging it
