Are there any Mudcatters heading to Thomas Point Bluegrass Festival in Maine this coming weekend? We're heading there with the kids along as the hurricanes don't start barrelling up the coast. Barry

Hi Barry, I was planning to go, as you know from the "strike songs for a manager" thread, but the strike is still going on, and I lose. (I'm over the self-pity. Now I'm just angry).

I truly hope you have a great time. If you run into them, please say hello for the Shaws to:

Ken & Yvonne & Carrie & Dick from Connecticut, Jim & Ellie from Rhode Island, Stuart & Linda from Massachusetts, Bob & Shirley from Maine, The Langleys from Nova Scotia, etc.

Pick one for me!

Hi Barbara, I'm not much of a bluegrass fan, it's the kids who vote to go there (I really can blame them), so I doubt if I know or will meet these people. I also came home this evening (Thrusday) to find at the 13th hour, that they may be considering a recount on the ballot, so as of the moment I have no idea where on this planet I'll be by the weekend. Hope your situation chages & you can make. Good Luck Barry

That time of year again. Hope to see all of the above this time. If any mudcats are going, I'd enjoy meeting you and sharing a few songs. Here's the website for the festival:
http://www.thomaspointbeach.com/bluegrass.html

Hope you all have a musical Labor Day weekend. I have this image of all of us scattered around the globe with a song on our lips, a musical instrument in our hands and a glazed look in our eye, sending music out from every curve of planet earth. It can only be good.

I will be going to Thomas Point, and, I would like to meet some "Mudcatters" there. I have a motor home named ROLLING HOME, and I carry a Taylor guitar.

Great! We have a wooden "Shaw" sign that we usually hang somewhere around our Sunline trailer, with a wheel cover that says "Bluegrass." Maybe we'll run into you. Oh, and we won't be in the QUIET area!

ok Barbara..I'll look for you. I try to park the rig in the quiet area, but, dont spend much time there. Only when my old bones demand rest. My rig is an Eldorado Encore class A motor home with, of course, a Maine plate.

Hey Barry, there is a little folk music at Thomas Point if you know where to look. After you cross the little gully, the snack bar is on your left. Turn right and follow the paved road, just a few sites down on the right you should find Ed Greenwood from New York. He and I (Kendall Morse) are often doing the folkie stuff there.

Thanks Kendall but this yr I'm rebuilding the porch that my friendly neighbor ants feasted on, they didn't even leave enough for me to burn so aside from a couple of well planned weekends I'm house bound & winter driven to finish. Have a ball, wish I could meet ya. Barry

Holy Cow, Kendall! You snuck in here when I wasn't looking and under an appropriate assumed name. Guess I finally bullied you into doing more than just lurking out there and snickering at our ignorance of things Maine. Did you see where I mentioned you in the cowboy songs thread? If you didn't get "Lavender Cowboy" from Burl Ives, you could let us know of some other source.

Rest assured, folks, if you can find Kendall at this bluegrass hoedown, you'll find folk music. And Kendall, look for the Shaw family. They're great folks, and not so bluegrass-bound that they can't share a song with some of us old folk fogeys. When you see 'em, give 'em my best!

Sandy

Thanks, Sandy! It's funny that we have bluegrass friends who call us folkeys, and folkey friends who call us bluegrassers. The music we like tends to be old and traditional, done with banjo and guitar and anything else that wanders up. Some of the first group have gradually admitted that they like our folk music, and some of the second group have (less willingly) conceded that some bluegrass is good. It's all about music, regardless of the adjectives.

Somehow the name Kendall Morse sounds familiar. Have we met before somewhere in New England?

Barbara: You may well have heard Kendall MC-ing at one or more Bluegrass shindigs. He also has one album of songs and another of authentic Maine humor on Folk-Legacy. He's noted not only for his down-home singing, but for his bottomless well (pit?) of folk humor - yarns, tales, and outrageous jokes. I know of no one who expresses him/herself more colorfully. Caroline always takes notes to add to her file of his metaphors and similes when she talks with him on the phone, just as she collects one-liners from Art Thieme.

Sandy

Hey Sandy. I would never snicker at you for lack of knowledge about Maine.. after all, I've been here since Cadillac Mountain first appeared.!! Yes, I did get Lavender Cowboy from Burl Ives. Yhere is more to that song, but, I dont sing the rest of it. Somehow keeping it short is better. A wise man, (probably a Mainer) said "Brevity is the soul of wit." How do I get to use my real name? I thought we were supposed to use pseudonyms??

Hi Kendall! Looking forward to meeting you. With initials like mine (BS) who needs a pseudonym?

I've gotta get back to work soon or I won't need to.

Hey Kendall...Wish we could visit with you and Greenwood for the weekend and trade some of our "novelty numbers". Sure you haven't forgotten them! Haven't seen you since Smokey's. See your brother Darel and Greenwood at Wrench Wranch sometimes. Have a great w/e!! Bob & Linda from NJ.

It's a shrinking world, ain't it, ghoques?

Any name will do, Kendall, if it hasn't already been grabbed. I see the full KENDALL MORSE shining proudly at the start of that last e-pistle. Dandy! Now you're in a position to accept full responsibility for what you post here. I guess you'll just have to keep it (more or less) clean!

Sandy (spoil-sport!)

I keep telling these folkies about all the fun they're missing at bluegrass festivals, Wendell. Some of them think it's all loud, fast and instrumental or nasal.

Say, you weren't on the mudcat last year when I was asking the question (unless you've been lurking a long time), but judging by where you said your buddy Ed Greenwood camps, it was probably YOU who was singing this song with a few folks around the outer edge of that circle: Roses are Blooming
I've been looking for the melody and lyrics ever since. Guilty?

It's Kendall with a k. no you didn't hear me singing Roses are Blooming, but I think I know it. The refrain anyway. A friend of mine redorded it a while back, so,.. how about if I put his tape in my guitar case and share it with you at T.P.??

I'm sorry Barbara.. it was When The Roses Bloom Again that I was thinking of. But, I still remember the tune to the refrain of the one you want, does that help?

(Sorry KKKKKendall. Trouble is, now I've got the name Wendell in my mind for some reason, and it's probably stuck...)

The song I'm looking for is something like "Roses are blooming, come back to me darling" which some mudcatters think is a Doc Williams tune. If you know it, I'd love to hear it. I heard it once two years ago around that circle at Thomas Point.

Barbara, today is Thursday.. I will be leaving for Thomas Point this am. Will probably park either by the woods on the tar road which goes to the left and ends up in the woods behind the stage, or, in the woods behind the stage. see ya there.
