Subject: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Jenny Date: 29 Jul 98 - 11:27 AM Hey ... Max ... Jenny, here ... Just had a chance to visit the Online Donation page, etc. Thanks ... it's a great page and I appreciate the secure server. I made a donation and ordered a t-short. Hopefully, the xlarge will provide enough room for my 5' zaftig figgar. If not, will send to a relative 'Cat. Any chance you will be offering 2x sizes in t-shirts, soon? I already order all my books/music via Amazon.com, but will use the Mudcat link for future purchases. Again ... thanks ... jen |

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Susan of DT Date: 29 Jul 98 - 07:56 PM Yes, we are thinking of ordering some 2x and 3x soon, now that Dick got back his outlay for the first batch (there are plenty left for anyone XL or smaller). The shirts really help when you go to festivals and want to find other mudcatters |

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Jenny Date: 29 Jul 98 - 08:07 PM Thanks, Susan ... give me a "heads-up" when you get them in. Speaking of festivals, etc. ... I'd like to have a Mudcat gathering on the East Coast, perhaps somewhere in the middle, in the last Fall, when the heat is not so oppressive. Any takers ... ??? jenny |

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Bill D Date: 30 Jul 98 - 12:18 PM Susan...what about encouraging Mudcatters to come to the FSGW Getaway?? This is about as close as we could come to the place the whole DT actually started?? And it is reasonably centrally located... If anyone is interested, look here If anyone thinks it is worthwhile to push this we could start a new thread...

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Susan of DT Date: 30 Jul 98 - 08:32 PM bill - I was about to suggest it when I read Jenny's post. The Greater Washington Folk Music Society Getaway on Columbus Day weekend is MARVELOUS. The weekend is held at a camp near Annapolis and is mostly workshops and late night singing. The workshops are usually on a theme and people come and sing what they know relating to it. There are a number of mudcatters who usually show up for that one - Bill D, Ferrara, LaMarca, Charlie Baum, Dick, me, and probably several I forgot to mention. So Jenny if you are anywhere near Maryland, which I assume you are since you suggested the middle of the east coast, come on over. Anyone else range really should consider it. It is not a "festival" with a stage and performers - it is a sharing. A few "guests" are invited, but the local DC group includes plenty of great singers, professional and otherwise. |

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Jenny Date: 30 Jul 98 - 11:18 PM Susan and Bill ... Actually, I live in Tallahassee, however, from '68-'79, I lived in D.C. and sang in different clubs and coffeehouses. After living in Fairbanks, Alaska, for 6 years, hopping in my vehicle and driving north is a piece of cake, and especially after driving the distance between there and here in 7 days. And ... Annapolis is one of my favorite places, although I'm not much of a camper anymore. I'll check out the "link;" keep me posted. Thanks ... jenny |

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Bill D Date: 01 Aug 98 - 12:45 AM Jenny...'camping' is not a very descriptive term for what we do..this is cabins, (a few sort of rustic, but most quite modern and heated)...barracks style, mostly...but we even provide ear plugs to cope with snoring! And Debby McClatchy cooks...and often does some late singing..it's always different, and always nice.. |
|
Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Jenny Date: 01 Aug 98 - 11:22 AM Bill ... that type of "camping" is more my style. I spent many years tent-camping and loved it but, as I recently said to someone, my idea of primitive camping is "a motorhome without a VCR." Actually ... I was kidding about the VCR. I like the idea of a cabin. BTW ... Breathe-Right Strips work wonders. Sounds like you've been a few times ... tell me more about it. My primary instrument is my voice and I have a 32 y/o Gibson B25 with which to accompany myself. I don't write and I don't play a plethora of different instruments, so I feel extremely humble around those who do ... ttfn ... jenny |

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Bill D Date: 01 Aug 98 - 05:08 PM *smile*...I've been to it 20 consecutive years now...(ah, the old days, when we were mostly younger!!)We get some of everything, we have a couple or three people who do some writing, but mostly just 'folk' who sing and/or play for fun..(and very occasionally for profit)we have a lot of people who do 'trad', but a little of everything gets done, you can almost always pick & choose...(or, choose not to pick...we have a number of pretty good ballad singers who play NO instrument..) I say 'have' loosely, as we have a large membership, but consider some of the fairly regular out-of-town attendees as 'haves' also. We do 'workshops', but there are always little groups who just get together and pick or sing on porches or benches...you know the drill...and then on Sat. & Sunday nights, after supper, there is a concert where it is first come, first served sign up and do a song. (lasts a couple hours...maybe 15-18 people each night) then the serious late night crowd finds a corner (or 2 or 3 corners) and things go till???? (I HATE to go to bed before everything is done...though at my age, I oughta consider it). Dick Greenhaus knows what I mean..*wink*...(yes, you, Dick....)

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Jenny Date: 01 Aug 98 - 09:47 PM Bill ... don't know how old you are but I turned 50 on July 20 and feel that sleeping is robbing me of precious time. I was always the one (even when I was little) who hated to go to bed 'cause I was afraid I would miss something! I bowed out of the corporate world this past Spring and find I'm so busy, I have to schedule sleep time. Anyhow ... I'm going to plan to head up north for the "getaway." It sounds like a great time and it will be wonderful to be around some free-thinkin' folk. I haven't played in a long, long time so I'd better get some caluses going on my fingertips! One thing I've noticed about the Mudcat Forum is a whole lot of people who's main interest is Irish music. I'm Irish (come from a long line of O'Neals) but have never been particularly into the music. Is there something amiss with me? ttfn ... jenny |

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Barry Finn Date: 01 Aug 98 - 10:42 PM Jenny, there's nothing amiss with ya, Irish is just a big part of the folk music world, it's been a big influence on American folk, as has Brittish & Scottish, it's also been a major influence in Aussie folk & sea music, so it's no wonder it's getting shot in the arm. This FSGW, how far (miles or time) from Boston would it be? Oct. slows down for me so there may be a remote chance of getting away. Does Debby, cook at all Folk Get Aways, or is it a hobby/job of her's, I know when I was in San Francisco about 16 of so yrs back she was, & I think still is cook at the Getaway there too? Barry |

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Bill D Date: 01 Aug 98 - 10:43 PM well!! Maybe I'll take up sales in my old age...(or maybe you were just ready to be sold..) I am 59, but don't look a day over 58..*grin*....(boy I sure hope some of my favorite people are here this year, after my high praise...) as to Irish, I think it is more attitude than ethnicity...I am Scots-Irish, but don't do much Irish...(prefer Scots music, myself..and lots of other stuff..) |
|
Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Bill D Date: 01 Aug 98 - 11:37 PM Barry..it is about 9 hours from Boston...(unless you drive faster than I do..) Debby is not doing quite as many of these things as she used to, but she still does 2 events a year for us...she has been cooking for our Getaway for about 12, 13 yrs now.. |
|
Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Charlie Baum Date: 02 Aug 98 - 12:24 AM Barry--I think it's more like 8 hours from Boston, but Bill probably stops longer/more often than I do. We should probably mention that for folks who WANT to use their own tents for privacy, it's been done in the past. (Though a rustic camp cabin offers mattresses--bring your own linen or sleeping bag--and much more comfort.) And it's the kind of place where those of us who prefer to sing a cappella can sing almost anything without showing off what bad instrumentalists we can be. And regarding ballads, I remember one evening in the boathouse when the ballads went on for at least four hours straight. (Non-balladeers had another jam going in the dining hall that evening.) Camp Letts, where the Getaway is held, is actually a few miles south of Annapolis. The post office is probably Edgewater, and the nearest village is probably Mayo. It's on a peninsula surrounded by arms of the Chesapeake Bay. If you had a boat (and enough time), you could sail there. --Charlie Baum |

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Bill D Date: 02 Aug 98 - 10:26 AM for driving and route information, take Charlie's word for it!..(except that, from what I hear, he NEVER stops unless the car demands it...*smile*) But he DOES have a 23 gigabyte map of the country hard-wired to his brain... and several times, people HAVE sailed right up to the camp! |

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Jenny Date: 02 Aug 98 - 11:39 AM Well, ya'll ... I'm definitely sold! I'm looking forward to receiving further into re housing arrangements, etc. I feel safe in assuming this is casual in the extreme and my "red taffeta" won't be necessary. Like I said, I'm not into the Irish music thing, however, I'm always willing to take a turn towards a new horizon. ( Since 1969, I've gone from Florida to Washington, D.C.; Washington, D.C. to Portland, Oregon; Portland, Oregon to Fairbanks, Alaska; Fairbanks, Alaska to Tallahassee, Florida). Reckon that makes me a true "wandering jew." And I'm really looking forward to meeting some of my 'Cat correspondees. ttfn ... jen |

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: dick greenhaus Date: 03 Aug 98 - 04:12 PM Well, as someone who's been attending since 1970 (I DID miss one year), I can say with some degree of confidence that I think the FSGW Getaway's worthwhile. Even if I'm surrounded by mere striplings like Day and Baum. |
|
Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Max Date: 03 Aug 98 - 04:26 PM You know, I might make it to the FSGW Getaway. Hmmm. |

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Rudy Ramsey Date: 05 Aug 98 - 12:12 AM Back on the subject of the thread... ;) I intend to make a contribution to Mudcat in the near future (I *really* appreciate what you folks do). Whether or not a I make a contribution will be entirely unaffected by its being tax deductible, but *when* I make it would be influenced by your plans in this regard. I read awhile back that you were applying for, perhaps, a 401(c)3 status. Any word on the prospects? Rudy |
|
Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Ferrara Date: 28 Aug 98 - 09:37 PM I'm bringing this thread up again because the folks who run the FSGW Getaway said they would love to have some Mudcatters show up this year, and this thread had lots of discussion of the Getaway. See also the info in the thread called "Greater DC Area Getaway (Invitation)". PLEASE, though, don't just show up without letting us know ahead of time, because we can't guarantee that there will be enought food on hand if people do that. |
|
Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Jenny Date: 29 Aug 98 - 09:45 AM I emailed the Getaway folks re more information, registration, etc., but so far haven't received a reply. Perhaps all is not, as yet, nailed down or they are terribly busy, or didn't receive my email. Anyhoooo ... further info would be appreciated ... jenny |

Subject: RE: Support the Mudcat ... Revisited From: Big Mick Date: 29 Aug 98 - 10:17 AM I sure wish I could make this gathering. I am going to save a week's vacation next year for it. I will have to pack the Missus and little one and drive from Michigan, but it sounds like exactly my favorite kind of gathering. Unfortunately it is an election year and that is my job. I would dearly love to meet Jenny, Barry, Ferrara, Rudy, Max, dick and all of you in our online community. I would really love to share the "ceol" (music) with you all. Mick |
