Subject: Reading threads offline? From: Ezio Date: 01 Jun 98 - 09:55 AM I think It would be very useful to have the possibility of dowloading the threads (for example as HTML or TXT file) of a given period and then read them offline (or on a machine non connected to the net). Anyone interested in this option? Is it techically feasible in a... painless way for you administrator(s)? Thank you Ezio |

Subject: RE: Reading threads offline From: Barbara Date: 02 Jun 98 - 01:32 AM Hi Ezio, I don't know how to do those cute flashing links, but if you go to the box upper right and enter "Judy's neat trick" and set the filter for 30 days it will pull up a May 13 thread by that name that tells you how to use Netscape - some versions anyway - to read threads offline. Does that help? Barbara |

Subject: RE: Reading threads offline From: Ezio Date: 02 Jun 98 - 09:29 AM I'm amazed for the load of info I can find in DT. Thanks Barbara and Joe. I missed that thread. However reading offline it is still a little tricky. It could be much better to download a single, zipped and portable file. Thank you. P.S. In the right colum of The Mudcat Cafe's Homepage it is still mentioned the April 97 version. I think it should be changed to Sprimg 98! By the way, I haven't yet downloaded the new version - I will do next saturday early morning with low net traffic. However, I'm sure you did a good job. A very big T H A N K Y O U !! |

Subject: RE: Reading threads offline From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Jun 98 - 04:09 PM Ezio - I was going to correct you and say that the downloadable version of the Spring 98 database was available, but that the online version probably wasn't. I decided to check before I put my foot in my mouth. Good thing I did - the online version is available, too. If you put apr98 in the search box in the upper-right corner of this page, you'll see all the new songs that were added. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Reading threads offline From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 03 Jun 98 - 01:21 AM Ezio, If I understand you correctly, you simply want to download a thread to your computer. You do this in the same way you download any file. Every browser has a way to do it. With netscape you hold down the shift key while you click on the link. With lynx you just press the "D" key. So just go up to the level where the thread is named--your list of threads and download the one you want. For example, with netscape I would hold down the shift key and click on "Reading threads offline". Then I would be presentted with a dialog box asking where I want to save the file, etc. I have a directory imaginatively called "mudcat" for this purpose. Murray |

Subject: RE: Reading threads offline From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 03 Jun 98 - 01:41 AM Oh yes, and I should add you can open the downloaded files with your browser and read them as if you were connected to mudcat. Murray |

Subject: RE: Reading threads offline From: Ezio Date: 03 Jun 98 - 04:27 AM I must apologize for my bad english. I've no doubt that sometimes I'm not able to expose clearly what I'm thinking. In this case I meant the possibility of downloading not a single threads but ALL the treads sent over of a period of time. I use MSIE and, as far as I know, this is not possible. Thank you all Ezio |

Subject: RE: Reading threads offline From: Max Date: 03 Jun 98 - 10:52 AM I have been thinking about offline thread hopping and don't really see the point in anything fancy. For now the entire thread system is in a 25MB Access database, so offering it for download is not feasable. I have thought and toyed with some of the new push technology and offline browsing and cacheing, but am unsatisfied by the principles. The Forum is realtime and interactive. Reading offline is one thing, but what if you want to post? Offliners timings will be off and would certainly post things that were already addressed. Anyhow, I will not stop thinking about it. I got one idea that will let you download all new messages since your last visit for offline viewing pleasure. Also maybe a custom search for offliners. |
