Subject: RE: LYR ADD: CIVILIZATION (bingo, bango, bongo) From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 01 Feb 06 - 09:02 AM Showing my age, I'll admit, but this song has been one of the deep subsurface songs in my life ever since I heard it played by Kay Kyser and his Kollege of Musical Knowledge on a radio program one day when I was home sick from school in the 1940s. I had a little plastic radio so I guess it was postwar, say 1947 or so. I was young enough and naive enough that I believed it. The announcer said something to the effect, "Now we're going to take you straight to the Congo, to a little village high on the headwaters of the Congo River, where the natives are singing one of their mysterious native songs. Let's see if we can hear them now..." And then the jungle drums, and these voices, and yes, they were the voices of a fairly silly radio variety band, but damn, I was just a ten year old and it took me some while to realize this wasn't a True Ethnic Recording from the Darkest Heart of Africa... Hence, I suppose, my love of world music to this day. Whew, glad I got that off my chest and onto your reptilian backbrain. Bob |

Subject: RE: LYR ADD: CIVILIZATION (bingo, bango, bongo) From: Charmion Date: 01 Feb 06 - 10:53 AM Oh, thank you, Gene (whoever you are), for posting this in 1998, and thanks Bob Coltman for hauling it out of the depths of the Cat. It's been lurking in my reptilian backbrain since the 60s, when my mother used to sing snatches of it when she was in a good mood. |

From: Bill D Date: 02 Feb 06 - 07:00 PM If I remember correctly, someone decided a few years ago that this was "the worst song ever written" in one of those strange lists that pop up mow & then...I disagreed, of course, as I can name 5 worse off the top of my reptilian backbrain. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Civilization ('Bingo, bango, bongo...') From: GUEST,Cindy Date: 02 Feb 06 - 09:37 PM I was searching for songs for my Senior Chair Exercise class and saw this song at itunes. I had a friend in high school that used to sing it in Italian. I asked people in my class if they know where it came from because it sounded like there was a visual to it such as a movie. One gal thought it may have been in a Tarzan cartoon. I can't believe that other people logged in about this song today. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Civilization (Bingo, Bongo, Bongo) From: Jim Dixon Date: 04 Feb 06 - 09:44 PM Oops! I overlooked something. allmusic also lists it under the title CIVILIZATION (BONGO, BONGO, BONGO). Under that title, the recording by The Andrews Sisters with Danny Kaye is shown on several albums. There are also recordings by Bing Crosby, Sy Oliver, The Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Louis Prima, Frank Sinatra, and Elaine Stritch. |
