Subject: RE: Looking for lyrics of From: Kyra Date: 10 May 98 - 09:19 PM That would be the one that goes "I am a little beggarman and beggin' I have been for threescore and more in this little isle o'green, I come from Liffey and down to Segoo and I go by the name of ol' Johnny Dhu"? |

Subject: RE: Looking for lyrics of From: Bruce O. Date: 11 May 98 - 12:25 PM This seems to be a late reworking of an old song. The mid 17th century "Politick Beggar Man" on my website is undoubtably a rewritten version of a popular song, probably Scottish. See "The Juggler" (Gaberlunzie?) in the 'Greig-Duncan Folk Song Collection', vol. 7. The second verse in that you click on above is in many beggar songs, and is from rhymed dialogue in the play 'The Three Ladies of London', 1584. The verse is usually traced to "The Beggars Chorus in the Jovial" (1684), but isn't found in all the early broadside copies, and had appeared earlier in another beggars' song. [Child #279, Jolly Beggar", and Appendix = "Gaberlunzie Man are undoubtably parlor song rewrites of the "Politick Beggar Man"] |

Subject: RE: Looking for lyrics of From: Moira Cameron Date: 16 May 98 - 03:08 PM I think you're talking about the one that goes like: I'm a hardened Newfoundlander, Michael Chaser is me name. I was born in ? harbour; I'm a fisherman by trade-- Born in the mornin' at a quarter after two With me hands in me pockets of me old ragadoo.
I can't recall the rest very well. I've only heard Tamarack's version of this. |
