Subject: My weekly Elderly check
From: Dale Rose
Date: 07 May 98 - 07:45 PM

Every week, usually on Thursday, the Elderly site comes up with a list of what they have new, or will be available soon. This week is not even one of the exceptional ones, but they have nearly 100 listings. I think it would be well worth your time to check it out as I do.

Here are just a few examples, which includes two absolutely essential albums from my point of view, The Old Time Mountain Guitar on County, and the new Natalie MacMaster traditional album on Warner Canada. No doubt someone else could go there and find an entirely different set of MUST HAVE albums.

What's new at Elderly I don't mean for this to be an Elderly advertisement, because there are many good places to buy music, but I don't know of any other site which updates in such a timely fashion with so many of the recordings that Mudcatters are bound to appreciate.

Lightfoot, Gordon A PAINTER PASSING THROUGH Eight new original songs, plus covers of Ian Tyson's "Red Velvet" and Steven & Steven's "I Used to Be a Country Singer" Release date 05/12/1998 CD WARN-CD46949.....list $16.98...our price $14.65 CA WARN-C46949.....list $10.98...our price $8.85

I whish FDR hadn't reformed the spelling of cheque. I thought this was a thread about pensions! ;^}

Seriously, there is some good stuff listed in your posting. I have found them very good to deal with as an international purchaser too.

One of my favorite forms of entertainment is to look in at their vintage instrument listings. I am not sure I would have the courage to buy one by mail, though.

Yeah, hey, Dale - how do you get an elderly check once a week? I get mine just once a month!

Murray, If you see something there you like, I wouldn't hesitate. I have bought both new and used instruments by mail from Elderly and have been completely satisfied with the products and service.

BTW, Wasn't it Teddy, not FDR, who reformed the spelling? Anyway, I can't think of a better place to spend them elderly checks.

I think you have to send your cheques to Elderly. They don't pay you to take their good stuff off their hands!

Earl, it is the time element (and the postage element) that I am concerned with. If I get an instrument from them it would take several months by surface or cost over $100 by airmail. Then there is customs. It can sit in their shed for some time. I am not sure if I would be hit for duties on a used instrument. If I want to return it for some reason, the process has to be reversed.

As far as timing goes, it does sound more reasonable that it was TR who did the reform.

The banks in Australia have a concept of a "stale cheque". That is one which is more than a year old and which need not be honored anymore. I suppose an elderly check is one that is not stale yet, but you had better hurry up and cash it. (I consider myself elderly but not stale ;^|))

I meant to update this once in a while, but then, I guess this is once.

Hey, wait a minute, I am the resident Elderly Instruments shill around here. How the hell is someone else getting paid??????? ***grin***

The only thing I would point out, as much as I love this store, is that you should always check the vendors who support the Mudcat FIRST, before going to those that don't.

Max, how about working out an arrangement with Elderly? They have such a great selection, and get such good play here. I know the staff very well here, having spent most of my adult earnings in this establishment. If you would like me to approach them, it is nothing for me to get over there. I would be happy to do it. They get a lot of play here. Drop me an email if you would like.

Now, Dale, about my cut of those cheques......GRIN.

All the best,

Mick Lane

Say, I could use some of that dough too! I'd ask for a chek but obviously the word is unspellable...so I'll take the dough. Make it chocolate chip cookie dough.

Seriously, let me second Mick's motion. I too have invested lots of money I didn't have to buy from these guys. Excellent selections on music and books, good prices, friendly phone conversations...great place. And that's not to mention the instruments...I've bought several guitars from them sight unseen and unplayed and I have always been happy. I look for the "as is" bargains and have gotten nothing but the straight dope.

Max, I'm kinda' new around here but Mick has a point. In a way I'm glad I don't live as close as he does!catspaw

I just want to chime in, again, with the thought that Elderly might be a good resource with which the Mudcat could have a financial relationship. They get mentioned frequently and, all in all, they have more of what Mudcatters want than the other sites.

Perhaps Max has already checked this out. If so, perhaps he could tell us if this is possible or not. If it isn't, I know how to shut up. At least most of the time I do.

Just a few of this week's offerings. Note the Tom Paxton (finally!) I saw it in Best Buy earlier in the week, but resisted buying it since I have most of it on vinyl.

I do agree with the thought of buying where the Cat gets a cut, but I don't think anyone else has such a comprehensive selection of what we like. (Speaking for all of you there)

Gorman, Skip A COWBOY'S WILD SONG TO HIS HERD Release date 02/09/1999 CD ROUN-CD0449

Lewis, Furry BLUES MAGICIAN Recorded in the late `60s, companion to the "Fourth & Beale" album Release date 02/09/1999 CD LUCK-CD9206
