Subject: Old banjo and fiddle tunes From: Doc K Date: 02 May 98 - 04:06 PM I have a collection of banjo and fiddle tunes which I recorded 40 years ago on large cassettes. The music consists of old tunes indiginous to the Appalacian area of NE Mississippi and NW Alabama rendered by an elderly musician who lived away back in the hills who had played all of his life. The problem is, I do not now have a recorder to replay them. Does anyone know of an institution or organization that would have the capability of retrieving this music from the large cassettes. I would like to donate the tapes and have someone make me a copy on smaller cassettes. There are probably 40 or 50 tunes as I remember that I recorded them for several hrs. I have several of the large cassettes. |

Subject: RE: Old banjo and fiddle tunes From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 02 May 98 - 08:50 PM I suppose you can try Jeff Place, Archivist, Center for Folklife Programs and Cultural Studies, Smithsonian Institute. He/they probably can point you in the right direction. There is a Smithsonian Folkways site at http://www.si.edu/folkways/start.htm but I think its purpose is to sell records. The other possibility is the Library of Congress. Murray |

Subject: RE: Old banjo and fiddle tunes From: Elliott Date: 06 May 98 - 12:47 PM In response to Doc K, he could contact Dr. Bill McNeil at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Arkansas. Bill is widely known and respected in the field of folklore and is in charge of the Folk Center archives. While our archives hold primarily Ozark related material, the music of Appalachia is closely related. Bill can be reached at the Ozark Folk Center, PO Box 500, Mountain View, AR 72560; phone 870-269-3280/870-269-3851 and fax 870-269-2909. The Folk Center is a part of the Arkansas State Park system and was developed to preserve important elements of the pioneer Ozark culture such as music, dance, narratives, and handcraft. Our craft village features about 20 exhibitors of pioneer handcraft, and we present close to 200 concerts each year of traditional Ozark Music. The Archive houses rare recordings, books, photographs, etc. |
