Subject: Best recent vocal folk CD From: steve t Date: 05 Apr 98 - 01:14 AM I haven't bought many CDs lately. I'm looking for suggestions, particularly albums with songs in English scattered throughout, but which don't rely too heavily on close harmony. |

Subject: RE: Best recent vocal folk CD From: Axe Date: 05 Apr 98 - 06:47 PM I don't know if it's really folk or what your taste in music is, but one my favourites that I've bought recently is Townes Van Zandt's "Rear View Mirror" (Sugar Hill Records). It's a collection of live recordings with just two guitars and a fiddle. Really nice if you're looking for some tunes to learn. Also, I'm a big fan of anything by Canadian artist Fred Eaglesmith. As always, however, take the opportunity to listen to these at the store before you buy.

Subject: RE: Best recent vocal folk CD From: Nathan Sarvis (nsarvis@iglobal.net) Date: 05 Apr 98 - 09:24 PM An excellent folk album (maybe not recent) is Harvey Reid's " Steel Driving Man. 19 songs, 71 minutes long and not a track on it you'd want to skip over. All of his recordings are topnotch, but for pure folk (all traditional songs) this is my choice for the best album since the 60s. You can get read all the liner notes - info on songs, etc., at Harvey's website http://www.woodpecker.com (Sorry, I don't know how to put links into messages.) All usual disclaimers apply.

Subject: RE: Best recent vocal folk CD From: Dale Rose Date: 06 Apr 98 - 12:23 AM When you are talking about timeless music, date of release does not mean all that much. One of my favorite albums is Lines On The Paper by Kate Wolf, 1977, currently available on Rhino. I like it just as much as I did when I bought the vinyl, back about 1980. The link will take you to the web site run by her family. There you can listen to realaudio samples of all her songs. I'd start with The Trumpet Vine, then explore the rest of the site.

Subject: RE: Best recent vocal folk CD From: Earl Date: 06 Apr 98 - 03:36 PM My favorite recent folk CD is "Dark Ships in the Forest" by John Roberts and Tony Barrand. A great selection of traditional songs with very simple arrangements. More info. |

Subject: RE: Best recent vocal folk CD From: Susan from California Date: 07 Apr 98 - 11:39 AM I hesitate to call anything folk (since the first time I was here a year ago, I mistakenly did, and had my hat handed to me :-) but the local music store files this artist in the folk section) but one of my favorites is Iris DeMent's "The Way I should". Her song "Wasteland of the Free" skewers (sp?) the current power structure, while "Quality Time" takes a shot at the parenting practices of many. "Letter to Mom" jusy plain makes me cry, as does "Walking Home". All done in a spare, clean, dare I say plaintive, style. Worth a listen and well worth the $$. |

Subject: RE: Best recent vocal folk CD From: Bert Date: 07 Apr 98 - 01:28 PM My latest purchase was "Tom paxton - Live for the Record" Exceptional value for money, Tom Paxton is always great but this CD has 29 tracks on it. You can't beat that. |

Subject: RE: Best recent vocal folk CD From: aldus Date: 08 Apr 98 - 01:45 PM None of these is particularly new but they are all great... Waterson/Carthy.. Common Tongue , also the solo album by Norma Waterson. You might also want to check out the wonderful singer of Gaelic songs from Cape Breton Mary Jane Lamond. |

Subject: RE: Best recent vocal folk CD From: Daniel / Germany Date: 08 Apr 98 - 02:46 PM Hi out there! I agree with the message before:the Waterson/Carthy-album is great.there´s also a great solo-CD by Eliza carthy! Another Album I really like is called "Dochas(hope)"by an american band called "The crossing". My favourite album at the moment is not a real folk album. It´s by a female songwriter from northern Ireland with the name "Juliet Turner". The album is called "Let´s hear it for Pizza". Most of the songs are only voice and acoustic guitar.I love it. Bye! |

Subject: RE: Best recent vocal folk CD From: Rusty D-18 Date: 21 Apr 98 - 08:43 PM Although I am reluctant to call this folk I think anyone looking for old style bluegrass and gospel music should turn to any of the Bluegrass album bands cd's vol 1-5 I am a true blue bluegrass fan and own all of these I think you will enjoy them. |

Subject: RE: Best recent vocal folk CD From: Art Thieme Date: 22 Apr 98 - 12:48 AM I took a chance and bought a CD by a fellow I'd never, ever heard before. His mame, Lil' Rev (with Pig Ankle Dave). Title: __Uke Town__ The whole thing is very loose but the sincerity and love for our music comes through on every track. It just MAKES ME SMILE! Reminds me, in a looser way, of Koerner, Ray & Glover's early things combined with early Kweskin jug band stuff and maybe even some Lovin' Spoonful tunes tossed in for good measure. I'm glad Stan Werbin at Elderly made this a pick in the latest catalogue. Art Thieme |
