Subject: Requests From: Bruce O. Date: 23 Jan 98 - 06:51 PM How about a little notice in header herre that all requests be posted to the thread, so all can see answers. e-mail to individual only if contributor wants to do that too. |

Subject: RE: Requests From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Jan 98 - 07:50 PM I think I'd agree with that, Bruce. Actually, I get a little peeved by people who post a request here and ask for e-mail replies, implying that they're too important to take the time to check back. I can understand it if there's no reply in a day or two, so maybe those who aren't "regulars" should come back and post their e-mail address if they don't get an immediate reply. Most of the time, we're pretty darn quick with our replies, dontchathink? I just can't get over how smart we are, collectively. If people want our wisdom, they can darn well come back and get it. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Requests From: Alan of Australia Date: 23 Jan 98 - 09:54 PM Well said Joe, I think a good approach to such people would be to post an answer to the thread and send them an email telling them to come back and look in the thread, briefly explaining why. Cheers, |

Subject: RE: Requests From: Bruce O. Date: 24 Jan 98 - 02:51 PM Well said Joe, precisely my feelings: If they can't check back, then they aren't really very interested, and why should I waste my time digging things up for them. |

Subject: RE: Requests From: Bruce O. Date: 24 Jan 98 - 03:43 PM I wonder what would happen to someone's inbox if he/she/ requested an e-mail reply on where a copy of "Froggie Went a Courting could be found". Probably 10,000 messages telling about Burl Ives' version. |

Subject: RE: Requests From: Jerry Friedman Date: 24 Jan 98 - 05:28 PM Some people who have e-mail but not Web access may get friends to post their requests, but then can't check back and don't want to bother their friends with checking. |

Subject: RE: Requests From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Jan 98 - 05:40 PM I like your gentle perspective, Jerry. I guess we tend to forget that those who stumble in here and post just one message are probably quite lost, and need a little hand-holding. Hey, like I'm a HUGE Billy Bragg fan! Please e-mail me all his lyrics right away!!!!Well, there's some hands I don't wanna hold.... -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Requests From: Sharon Date: 24 Jan 98 - 05:49 PM I agree. Heck, half the fun is checking in and seeing how many responses there are to one's thread. That's what we're all about here........working together collectively to answer questions and help each other |

Subject: RE: Requests From: Elektra Date: 26 Jan 98 - 12:53 PM Don't forget the folks who may be more used to mailing lists -- which ENCOURAGE the use of email instead of the public forum -- particularly for rambling off topic!

Subject: RE: Requests From: Jon W. Date: 26 Jan 98 - 01:10 PM I suppose it can't hurt to post a reply here and then copy and paste it to an e-mail message if the person requests it--along with a note stating it was posted to the public forum for the use of others who might have had the same question. |

Subject: RE: Requests From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Jan 98 - 03:03 PM Whatever the case, I've learned it's always wise to remember how easy it is for online words to have barbs. We may have no ill will, but often if we say something online that has any sort of negative tone, it comes off sounding hurtful. Or, if we work too hard to remove the hurtful tone, it sounds condescending. When I'm writing online, I always make a concerted effort to convey a friendly, upbeat tone. When I READ online messages, I make an effort to understand what I'm reading in a positive tone. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Requests From: Bruce O. Date: 26 Jan 98 - 03:23 PM Another good reason to post to thread only is so one doesn't redo what has already been contributed. |

Subject: RE: Requests From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Jan 98 - 03:33 PM Note my message above about the Billy Bragg fan. Yesterday, I got an e-mail from Billyboy@blockhead.com. Billyboy's typing seemed a lot like the inimitable style of Gene Graham, but the e-mail menu says it was indeed from Billyboy. I'm STILL trying to figure out how Gene did it (or IF he did). Billyboy, if you exist in the flesh, I'm sorry for speaking ill of you. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Requests From: Jerry Friedman Date: 28 Jan 98 - 04:01 PM No, Joe, speak ILL of somebody once! And don't regret it! (Only don't make it me.) |

Subject: RE: Requests From: RS Date: 31 Jan 98 - 01:00 PM But but but. I am a regular visitor here, but go through time periods during which I am too busy even to check in (especially since realistically I never stay for less than an hour, even when I *promise* myself just to check the headlines & sign right off again. So it's safest not to click the bookmark at all). This meant that - in the days before "Tracers" - I _know _ of several replies that I almost missed, since they came in during times when I had been off-line for a week or two, & I almost didn't go back far enough to see them when I did return. And it's the very speediness of the responses that can cause problems here! - in other words, when I post a request, I usually check for replies at least once a day for the next week, but if nothing has appeared, I may give up ... and miss a delayed reply if I don't happen to check in at the right time. For members, "Tracers" has pretty well solved that problem. But new visitors & non-members don't have access to that resource. So an e-mail to notify that a reply has been posted, is most helpful to the occasional visitor. On another point, it is definitely newsgroup etiquette to post one's e-mail address, to avoid cluttering up the whole group's mailboxes. New user may not realise that the opposite etiquette applies here, & be taken aback to discover that their attempts to be polite are in fact taken as rudeness. (an interesting cultural dilemma). Lastly, another music group I subscribe to had a long discussion about copyright issues, which concluded that it was ok to reply to song requests as long as this was done privately, but that public replies to the group as a whole could be interpreted as a form a publication & therefore copyright infringement. And people who did post to the group as a whole, risked being flamed & roundly rebuked. In my own view, I agree with Alan of Australia: post the reply here, & e-mail the requester to notify of the new posting. |
