Hi - boy, I'll do anything to get people to use these programs, so we can get to the point where we can share tunes, not just lyrics. It's been so long since I used DOS and Windows 3.1 that I'm afraid I forget how they work. We can call in Alan from Australia to help you with that.
I can talk you through Windows 95 setup fairly easily, though. Maybe others can learn in the process.
First, put the file you downloaded, miditxt.exe into its own, separate directory (or folder). I call my directory MIDITXT, and I also created a subdirectory under it called "WORKING."
Next, double-click on the file miditxt.exe, and it will unzip itself into several files, most importantly, mid2txt.exe and txt2mid.exe.
Right-click on txt2mid.exe, and a menu will pop up. choose "create shortcut," and a shortcut will show up on your desktop. Do the same with mid2txt.exe.
Go to your desktop, and you should find icons for both programs. Right-click on an icon, and select "properties" from the menu that will appear. Select "program" from the tabs that appear, and you will see that things are pretty-much set up for you.
This is optional, but it's a good idea to specify a working directory in that "program" box - mine is
"c:\MIDITXT\working."
Hit "OK," and you should be ready to go.

Now you get to harvest the lyrics. if you see a song posted in the forum, highlight it and right-click on it, and select "copy" from the menu that appears. That puts the file onto your Windows clipboard. Then open a text editor like "Notepad," and paste the song tune into Notepad and save it as a *.txt file, preferably in your "working" directory.
OK, so you have a file now called "songname.txt." Drag that file onto the icon for txt2mid.exe, and a midi file will be created in your "working" directory. If you did everything correctly, a window should appear on your screen telling you that the conversion was completed successfully.
Assuming you did everything correctly, you should now have a file called songname.mid in your working directory, and you should be able to double-click and play it, just like that.
Once you've harvested a couple of tunes, you should be ready to convert your MIDI file tunes to text, and post them. But for now, this is a good start.
For those not quite ready to do this, I'll volunteer to post tunes for you. I imagine Alan or Alison and maybe even Dick and Max might be willing to do that for you until you figure out how to do it yourself. I may be the least busy of the bunch, though, and I'm willing to help. If you want a file converted and posted, e-mail it to me as an attachment, Joe-Offer@msn.com.
Hope that helps.
-Joe-
