Subject: On The Beautiful Blue Danube From: Gloria Date: 27 Dec 97 - 01:04 AM I am just wondering whether lyrics to this waltz really exist or someone 'concocted' in up for a competition. I heard a choir singing it a few months ago. Anybody with the lyrics (in English) be kind enough to post them to me? Thanks. |

Subject: Lyr Add: ON THE BLUE DANUBE From: Gloria Tham Date: 30 Dec 97 - 03:54 AM I found the lyrics somewhere. I'm not very sure about them because some of it seems a bit awkward even in the grammar sense. Yet it fits into the melody. Anyway, it goes like this: Oh waters blue, (oh waters blue) We hasten to you, (we hasten to you) Our homeland so dear, (Our homeland dear) Our course we steer, (Our course we steer) By one bright star, (by one bright star) That shines above, (that shines above) And from afar, we'll come home To the land we'd always loved Love will call us home, far across the foam Night is falling, love is calling From our dear homeland, from our motherland Love is calling, calling, calling wanderers home * O land so free, so fair Our home our hearts are there Dear land we're true to you And ever hold thee beyond compare There where the moon doth gleam Gently gliding through We wish our hearts be true And life's a lovely dream Repeat * and back to 1st verse. |

Subject: RE: On The Beautiful Blue Danube From: Wolfgang Hell Date: 06 Jan 98 - 08:16 AM If you are interested in the history of this waltz, why it had no lyrics at first, and more than one set of lyrics later, look here . The lyrics Gloria Tham has posted are a close translation of the German lyrics to this waltz, written some twenty years after Johan Strauss had composed the music. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: On The Beautiful Blue Danube From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Jan 98 - 03:51 AM Also, Herr Wolfgang, oh man of many links, do you have a link to the German lyrics, for those of us who like to think we can speak a bit of German? For that matter, do you know of a good German search engine, or what tricks to you use to search for German stuff on the web? -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: On The Beautiful Blue Danube From: Wolfgang Date: 07 Jan 98 - 04:18 AM Joe, I use Alta Vista, and that's not a good machine for the German sites. However, I don't know a better one. And I found the above site when I tried (in vain) to locate the German lyrics. My memory, as usual with German lyrics, only gives me the first line. I'll try my books at home, but my collection of German songbooks is much smaller than that of Irish songbooks. I also would like to see the original lyrics, but it's not probable that I'll be the one to provide them. Wolfgang |
