Subject: Copyright search: A-Soulin' From: Moira Cameron Date: 13 Dec 97 - 12:13 AM Can anyone out there tell me who owns the copyright to this song by Peter, Paul and Mary. I've been trying to track it down for a few years now. |

Subject: RE: Copyright search: A-Soulin' From: Bill Date: 13 Dec 97 - 02:16 AM Howdy Moira, I happen to have a couple of PP&M songbooks from days when I started playing and singing way back when. According to them, the answer to your question is that the copyright owner for A'Soalin' is PEPAMAR MUSIC CORP. in 1963 & 1967. The books say by (or words and music by) Paul Stookey, Tracy Batteast and Elena Mezzetti. Those are the facts from the books. My opinion is that PEPAMAR is an acronym for Peter, Paul & Mary. I believe that the various songs that make up the song are in the public domain, but that the particular arrangement you asked about is their copyright. Hope this helps some. I don't recall seeing anything about PEPAMAR at the PP&M web site, but you can e-mail a question about it from there if you need to know more about using that copyrighted version of the song. Their site is http://www.downeast.net/ppm/ if you don't have that marked.

Subject: RE: Copyright search: A-Soulin' From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 12 Dec 02 - 11:47 AM The onsite search-engine here isn't working properly at the moment, but you'll see that someone has now kindly added a list of links to other discussions of this song that we've had here in the past (at the top of this page). They should contain all the information you need. Apart from cobbling together two or three quite separate English traditional songs, PP&M's only real contribution was in changing the spelling of Souling to the frankly bizarre Soalin, so far as I can see. |
