This is one of those weird cases where Side B became the big hit and side A was mostly forgotten. (allmusic lists 250+ albums that include I SAW MOMMY KISSING SANTA CLAUS, by various artists, and none that have WILLY CLAUS.) The only recording I could find on the 'Net is this one: "Christmas Unplugged" by Ron & Nancy OneSong. I couldn't find any lyrics online, but I found a quote here: "Willy Claus, Willy Claus, little son of Santa Claus" I also found this posting at another forum where someone says s/he knows all the lyrics, but didn't post them. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'Willie Claus' Circa 1954 (Willy Claus) From: PoppaGator Date: 02 Dec 04 - 08:38 PM Hard to believe "I Saw Mommy..." was the B-side of ANYTHING -- it's a great Christmas novelty song that appeals to both children and adults, each on their own level, and playfully deals with the crucial issue of whether (and, more essentially, HOW) one believes in Santa. While presiding as Santa at the local mall the last two years, I enjoyed playing simple Christmas songs on a toy xylophone during those rare times when I wasn't occupied with a solid line of visitors. "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" -- even as a strictly instrumental selection -- was always instantly recognizable, always brought on plenty of smiles and lifted eyebrows, and never failed to draw a new crowd of patrons. Far and away my number-one xylophone number. (Of course, when you're restricted to a single octave, C to C, no sharps and no flats, there's a limit to the songs you can try. "Joy to the World" works very nicely, always elicited a positive response, but nothing like "Mommy.") "Willie Claus" -- which I never heard of before -- is obviously a more arduous effort in songwriting, a lengthy lyric much like many traditional ballads, and is based upon a conceit *nearly* as clever as that of its B-side. And, of course, I haven't heard it sung and have no idea of the melody, so I can't pass judgement on that. Even so, and even though it'll probably be an interesting and cute project for some folks to resurrect and perform, I can't see it measuring up to the all-time-classic "I Saw Mommy," and am surprised that the record company people back in '52 couldn't see which of the two songs would most successfully pass the test of time. |

My father had it on a 78 and would play it for me every year around Christmas on his old Victrola. I seem to remember that the 78 had a blue label. It met a sad end when my sister sat on it and it broke in two pieces. I still have it somewhere, I'm sure, as my father seldom threw anything away. |

She moved to Arizona with her mother, and performed for and impressed Rex Allen, the cowboy actor and singer, who had a show there. She eventually wound up with a recording contract and became a "regular" on both the Pinky Lee Show and on Tennessee Ernie Ford's variety show. She was a cute blonde with a pony tail and lots of stage presence who became quite a star in the 1950's and into the sixties. She is, I believe, semi-retired and living in Oklahoma City, after an up-and-down later life and issues with either alcohol or drugs or both. As a teenager, I can remember thinking she was "hot," in a sort of wholesome way. |

My mom who is 63 years old sung Willie Claus to us every year when we were growing up. She said she learned it in Elementary School but had never met anyone else who knew the song. We made it a family tradition to sing it every year at our annual Christmas party and any other parties we attend. A friend of mine googled to lyrics after hearing us sing it last year and told me about this blog. Now I know my mom did not make it up. Willie Claus is a great Christmas Song!!!! |
