Subject: searching for lyrics with their tunes From: little cyan Date: 16 Jul 97 - 03:37 PM I'm really interested in learning some of the folk songs on the net, but I don't know how the tune goes. Having the lyrics posted is a great start for me, but I wondered if there is a page out there with the musical score to go with them. If anyone has found such a page, I'd appreciate knowing where it is! Thanks! |

Subject: RE: searching for lyrics with their tunes From: Barry Finn Date: 16 Jul 97 - 04:08 PM If you're looking for a sond that's in the DT, at the bottom of the page, if the tune is there, pree Click To Play, you'll get a short tune, it's a far cry from having nothing to go on. Hope this helps. Barry |

Subject: RE: searching for lyrics with their tunes From: Alice in MT Date: 16 Jul 97 - 04:32 PM This reminds me of the suggestion by LaMarca to put together a bibliography of song books. Is there a possiblity of doing that? Would you like us to email DT in the correct format the lists of contents, title, author, publisher, etc. to contribute to a bibliography of song books? You all do such a fine job keeping the Mudcat and DT going, we probably don't tell you often enough how much all of us using your site appreciate your work!! Thank you!!!! Alice |

PS I'm working on evaluating no-cost/low-cost software for printing out scores. There are some promising ones! dick

Subject: RE: searching for lyrics with their tunes From: Helen of Oz Date: 16 Jul 97 - 09:55 PM This is a site I just discovered called Music Database, for British folk tunes - you can search, and get gif files of the sheet music. http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/Department/Staff/ef/database.html They have a page which refers to the songs/tunes in a number of song books, and I have seen other sites on my cyber-travels which have similar lists. It is probably worth doing some intensive searches to see what is available now and setting up a links page (the absence of which on this site has been bemoaned & bewailed, I notice, in another recent posting) rather than setting yourselves such an awesome task & finding out it has already been done elsewhere. I'll do some more cyber-surfing and let you know what I have found. Helen |

Subject: RE: searching for lyrics with their tunes From: Laoise, Belfast Date: 18 Jul 97 - 11:21 AM I found a site with Union songs including some Woodie Guthrie songs which come with tunes and lyrics. Try http://www.chepd.mq.edu.au/boomerang/unionsong/uo24.html I have the same problem. I don't have a soundcard and the computer I'm on is completely useless. If a tune isn't in a GIF format it doesn't print out well at all. It can be frustrating reading the lyrics to all these great folk songs with no idea how the tunes go. It would take forever to go to libraries and look each one up - even then its not guarenteed to be there. I am going back to scour the infinite reaches of the web... Saoirse, Laoise. |

Subject: RE: searching for lyrics with their tunes From: dick greenhaus Date: 18 Jul 97 - 11:27 AM Laoise- Don't be frustrated. If you download your own copy of the database from this site, you'll get a music player that doesn't reequire a soundcard. Works of your computer's beeper. I'm also researching some no cost/low cost programs that will permit you to print out scores for the congs we have. |

Subject: RE: searching for lyrics with their tunes From: RS Date: 18 Jul 97 - 05:12 PM To Whippoorwill: Laoise's link works if you leave out the final page id (uo24.html) and just go to : http://www.chepd.mq.edu.au/boomerang/unionsong/ |

Subject: RE: searching for lyrics with their tunes From: Whippoorwill Date: 21 Jul 97 - 10:33 AM RS: Got it. In the Songbooks subdirectory at that site I found links to a directory of Austrailian folk songs with lead sheets and to the Sing Out Magazine home page. TNX. |
