Subject: Della and the Dealer? From: Bobby O'Brien Date: 12 Jul 97 - 07:15 AM Does anyone have a copy of the record "Della and the Dealer" as written and recorded by Hoyt Axton? I would like to either purchase the record, or a tape of it, if anyone of you fine folk have it :)

Subject: RE: Della and the Dealer? From: Les Blank Date: 13 Jul 97 - 06:55 PM Bobby: Della appears on two of ole Hoyt's albums: 1. A Rusty Old Halo, 1979 on Jeremiah 2. Hoyt Axton LIVE, 1981 also on Jeremiah. Both are very hard to come by these days and very rare on CD -- however, you can try The Nashville Connection at 1-800-505-6685 for the second one listed above. Good searchin' Les |

Subject: Della & the Dealer & a Cat named Kalamazoo From: Genie Date: 02 Aug 10 - 03:41 PM You can watch and hear Hoyt sing Della And The Dealer on YouTube. Also, here are the lyrics, as Hoyt sings them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZHSIhdYSZY DELLA AND THE DEALER Hoyt Axton It was Della and a dealer and a dog named Jake And a cat named Kalamazoo Left the city in a pick-up truck, Gonna make some dreams come true. Well they rolled out west where the wild sun sets And the coyote bays at the moon, Della and the Dealer and a dog named Jake And a cat named Kalamazoo. Cho: If that cat could talk what tales he'd tell About Della and the Dealer and the dog as well But the cat was cool And he never said a mumblin' word. Down Tucson way there's a small cafe Where they play a little cowboy tune, The guitar picker was a friend of mine By the name of Randy Boone. Well, Randy played her a sweet love song And Della got a fire in her eye. The Dealer had a knife and the dog had a gun And the cat had a shot of rye. Cho. Well the Dealer was a killer; he was evil and mean And he was jealous of the fire in her eye. He snorted his coke through a century note And he swore that Boone would die. Yeah, the stage was set when the lights went out, There was death in Tucson town. Two shadows ran for the bar back door, One stayed on the ground Cho. Two shadows ran from the bar that night And a dog and a cat ran too. And the tires got hot on the pickup truck As down the road they flew. It was Della and her lover and a dog named Jake And a cat named Kalamazoo Left Tucson in a pickup truck, Gonna make some dreams come true. I know, it's in the DT too, but there are some errors. E.g, in the DT it says "bodies" where Hoyt sings "shadows." Also, it was the dealer who had the knife and the dog who had a gun. Couple of other lyric discrepancies too. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Della and the Dealer (Hoyt Axton) From: Mr Happy Date: 12 Aug 14 - 01:08 PM On the record, the dog's name sounds like 'Jig' not 'Jake' Anyone know which? Also, I performed this song in a sesh yesterday & a query arose whether the dealer was a gambler/ cardsharp or a drug pusher. Suggestions? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Della and the Dealer (Hoyt Axton) From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 Aug 14 - 01:47 PM I listened to the recording on YouTube (see the link above, in Genie's message) and I find that the words he sings exactly match what Genie posted (except for a few insignificant words like "well" and "yeah"). And I believe he sings "Jake." I have not heard the studio recording. By the way, Spotify has several recordings of this song by other artists, but it doesn't have the one recorded by Hoyt Axton. It even has a German version called "Della und der Dealer" and (I think) a Czech version called "Della" sung by Karel Gott. |
