I'm on my way to Ireland for a somewhat short holiday (7-14th of July), but would love do find some folk festivals. Did Ballyshannon last year but I suppose that's on later, as well as Listdoonvarna(?).

btw - are there any European "festivalfinder"?

It's funny you should ask this as I just posted a note on the thread Favourite Folk Festivals about the Miltown Malbay Festival in County Clare. Some friends of mine are going down on Friday (4th) - it starts this weekend and goes on for two weeks so you should be able to catch it. The second weekend is the best(July 11 - 14)

Its an excellent festival with traditional music sessions and mad drinking sessions happening in every pub (there's about two pubs for every inhabitant in the village). There are workshops in just about every instrument you can imagine including singing. There are concerts from top artists - last year Triona Ni Dhomaill of Bothy Band played although I didn't get to see her.

About two or three years ago Captial Radio in London announced it as a New Age festival so all these traveller types show up. It makes it very colourful (see favourite festival thread).

There's a short walk to the seaside and if you've got a car you should try and get up to the cliffs of Moher and Doolin, another great session town.

As it is over the weekend of the 12th Marching season here in Belfast I may well be going down. Look out for me - I have mad curly black hair and I play the mandolin.

Tciofaigh me thu.

Laoise.

On the subject of the Milltown Malbay festival (aka The Willy Week, but that's another story):

Its a great festival with lots of sessions workshops etc. I can recommend the singing workshop - which covers both Irish and english singing (illustrated seminars rather than classes).

Singers tend to congregate in Marrinans or "The Blondes" - just ask, They often move out into the ocuntry at night when things get loud!

Enjoy it - I certainly intend to.

Regards

My friends and I are planning a trip to Ireland this summer and wondered when the Listdoonvarna Festival occurred? Thank you so much! Jill
