Subject: lyrics-List of London Pubs
From: Hutch

Does anyone know and/or have the patients to type out the words to a song called the London Ordinary, which is basically a 19th century (?) list of London beer houses with a literary joke on each line telling what type of person dines there.

It's a very accurate and almost complete list, so I'm told, and I know that there is a performance of it on the album The Tale of Ale, issued by CAMRA in the 70's (before my time!!)

Hutch, I have a CD re-issue of The Tale of Ale at home; I will check and see if they list the lyrics, and what label it's on. I got it from Heather Wood at a folk festival somewhere a year or so ago...May take a couple days to get back to you, 'cause my net access is at work an d my free time is shrinking...

Thankyou again! Actually, the title may be the London Ordinal, but you knew which one I meant.

Hutch - sorry to take so long to get back to you, and with bad news, yet. I have two recordings of the London Ordinary, one on "The Tale of Ale" (FreeReed CD23)and the other done by a British trio called Jolly Jack on a Fellside LP. Unfortunately, neither had a lyric sheet. While I'm willing to type out the lyrics, I probably won't find the time to transcribe them (it's a LONG song as you probably remember). Another alternative is FreeReed's website:

http://www.freedmus.demon.co.uk/

They have E-mail; if you don't want to buy "The Tale of Ale", maybe someone there has the lyrics and can send them to you... Meanwhile, I'll check some of the books in my library and see if I've got a written source somewhere.

Mary
