Subject: RE: Over the Waterfall From: hartley Date: 02 Jun 97 - 08:13 PM I'm sure the tune is much older, but Michelle Shocked has a version with lyrics on her Arkansas Traveler albumn. It is performed with the Hothouse Flowers in Dublin, Ire. She gives no credit for the lyrics. I don't have these lyrics written, but can do if you are interested. |

Subject: Lyr Add: OVER THE WATERFALL (Michelle Shocked) From: rosebrook Date: 12 Oct 97 - 12:49 AM Offering the lyrics to this fun song if you'd like to include it in the database. My band likes to perform it in conjunction with the fiddle tune by the same name. OVER THE WATERFALL Well I thought I knew what I was doing, I was wrong. Mistakes I've made and lived to tell, I tell 'em in a song. I knew a river wide and deep, her banks were very tall. At one end was a mountain stream at the other was a waterfall at the other was a waterfall. I asked the old man by the river, but he did not recall The last attempt to ride in a barrel Over the waterfall. The ferryboat man, he did tell me that the chance was very small. None survived to remain alive Goin' over the waterfall Goin' over the waterfall. So I built myself an oaken barrel and inside I did crawl. I broke the record, but I broke my back Goin' over the waterfall And it's been my luck to live to tell the only way I can. That it don't hurt you when you fall Only when you land, I said only when you land, I said only when you land. |

Subject: RE: ADD: Over the Waterfall From: dulcimer Date: 12 Oct 97 - 08:00 AM I heard this version by M. Shocked on her Ark Traveler tape and it is at her website. I think the lyrics are pretty good, but questioned whether it was made up by her to fit the tune or got it from an older source. I always though the tune was a fiddle tune with no words. What's the history of the lyrics and tune? |

Subject: RE: Over the Waterfall From: Splott Man Date: 12 May 04 - 07:56 AM Myself and Pat Spoons did the Michelle Shocked version last night, afterwards a woman came up and said her dad (a Durham miner working in south Wales) used to sing it when she was small (I estimate the late 50s). Don't know if that helps... Splott Man |
