Subject: Chieftans? From: jamas@gil.com.au Date: 17 May 97 - 10:40 PM I've been trying to get the lyrics to "Killibegs" by the Chieftans but I've had no luck to-date. A couple of people have indicated that they might be able to supply them - but to date, the lyrics have still not appeared. If anyone can help (by posting the lyrics - not just "I think I know them" - and never to be heard from again} I would very much appreciate it. Tony |

Subject: Lyr Add: BOYS OF KILLYBEGS (Tommy Makem) From: John Date: 19 May 97 - 07:37 PM BOYS OF KILLYBEGS (Tommy Makem)
There are wild and rocky hills on the coast of Donegal.
CHORUS: With a pleasant, rolling sea and the herring running free,
Well you've donned your rubber boots and you've got your oilskins on,
Now you're headed out to sea and the wind is running free,
When the weather's blowing rough and the work gets very tough,
Well there's purple on the hills and there's green down by the shore,
Enjoy, |

Subject: RE: Chieftans? From: jamas Date: 25 May 97 - 07:06 PM Many thanks John - I'm not sure if this is the same song as I'm looking for. I'll try it later (I'm supposed to be working right now!) But whether it is or not many thanks anyway. If it isn't - then I'll just have to learn this one! Tony |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Killybegs From: mousethief Date: 04 Dec 00 - 06:23 PM I found this searching on google for "killybegs lyrics." It was the first "hit." Killybegs My heart was warm with family love as I slipped into a chair Beside my Uncle John, my daughters 'cross the table there I'd walked the docks in misty rain; a pain was in my legs But I'd seen the dream of kinsmen in the boats of Killybegs The banter of my uncle and my daughters filled the air And the Gunning Brothers(?) next to us were glad that we were there I was kind of quiet listening at the window ledge For the music of the harbour, the birds of Killybegs Down the coast not far was Galway land of joys and Kinnamar(?) At their supper and asleep we would visit(?) there tomorrow I worried if my words would e'er be sung by Irishmen Or out here on the docks(?) like the fish of Killybegs A radio was playing though we never heard a word But the rhythm of the music was familiar if absurd And hark'ning intensity(?) for silence did I beg Oh, what a song was playing in the air of Killybegs I couldn't quite believe it for it sounded rather strange The instruments were different and the key had been changed I reached to turn the volume up then teetered on my legs A girl from Tipperary sang my song in Killybegs ----- Alex |

Subject: Lyr Add: KILLYBEGS (from The Chieftains) From: GUEST,Paul Date: 04 Nov 05 - 06:22 AM Maybe a little to late for Tony, but here are my best stab at the lyrics (from listening to the song), so that anyone else who finds this page (like me) can get what they are looking for. But if anyone else has the definitive version, please post it. My heart was warm with family love, as I slipped into a chair Beside my Uncle John my daughters 'cross the table there I'd walked the docks in misty rain; a pain was in my legs But I'd seen the dream of kinsmen in the boats of Killybegs The ban'er of my Uncle and my daughters filled the air And the Donegalers next to us were glad that we were there I was kind of quite listening out the window ledge For the music of the harbour, the birds of Killybegs Down the coast not far was Galway, and (planned) the joys from Connemara After supper and a sleep, we would be going there tomorra' I worried if my words would there sung by Irishmen Or right here on the docks, like the fish of Killybegs A radio was playin' though we never heard a word For the rhythm of the music was familiar if absurd A harkening intensity for silence did I beg Oh what a song was playing in the air of Killybegs I couldn't quite believe it for it sounded rather strange The instruments were different and the key it had been changed I reached to turn the volume up, then tears on my legs A girl from Tipperary sang my song in Killybegs |

Subject: RE: Chieftans- Killybegs From: paddymac Date: 04 Nov 05 - 05:33 PM That "Another Country" CD is the only recording of this "killybegs" I have heard, and it is super. The entire CD is surely a keeper. Talk about "crossover." It was a cross-over for the Chieftains, but it was more of a "homecoming" for folks joining up with them. Them roots gits pretty tangled after a generation or two.
Two quite different songs have been confused in this thread. To avoid further confusion, please post here (click) if you want to discuss KILLYBEGS by Jimmy Ibbotson (of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) and Paddy Moloney (of the Chieftains), or here (click) if you want to discuss THE BOYS OF KILLYBEGS by Tommy Makem. --JoeClone, 6-Nov-05. |
