Subject: LYRICS: Glad I'm a Gladiator ?
From: AndyG (operag@bridge.anglia.ac.uk)

I'm looking for the lyrics to a song which I believe comes from the british music halls judging by the words of the chorus which went pretty much as follows:-

I'm glad, glad, very very glad,
I'm glad I'm a gladiator.
Ancient Rome, that's my home,
Fried fish shop in the hippodrome.
I'm glad, glad, very very glad,
From my helmet to my toes,
Oh, my old dad, was a roman lad,
And he gave me a roman nose.

I've only heard the song once years ago,and I've never been able to find a copy or a recording. If anyone can provide the words, or any other information I'd be ever so grateful.

AndyG

I don't have the words to gladiator, but I used to play for an American Football team called the Guernsey Gladiators. Also I sing with a shanty group called Jenkins Ear. One of our crew Jerry Cobb, does the Gladiator as a perty piece when he is the worse for drink, or is in high spirits. He's not on the net ( although he should be as he's a fih seller). You can contact him via

Guernsey Fish Supplies The Old market Fountain St. St Peter P{ort Guernsey Channel Islands UK

You could try Guernsey tourism (I think they have a web page, Jerry is fairly well known in the island).

Emial me back if you need more info.

After 3 years? and, I am confused about the reference to American Football, and then the Island.......are we in Guernsey, (somewhere USA, like Wyoming) or on the island of Guernsey? duh, it's late and I am stoopid/tired. There is a Guernsey, Wyoming, but last I knew, they were the Vikings.........I guess we could e mail him if the address still works. And no clues at all to the first poster........

The author is credited as Dave Holden, although the version that Micca does has an extra verse that he provided. Of course, when you get mudcatters doing it, new verses appear as if by magic.....
