Subject: ADD: The Bergen (Jez Lowe)^^ From: LaMarca Date: 04 Apr 97 - 04:01 PM This song was written by Jez Lowe; he said that he saw a graveyard on the coast of Scotland or Northern England where the local people had buried the bodies of a Norwegian fishing boat that had gone down offshore in a storm. They didn't know the crewmen's names, so they put the name of the ship, The Bergen, on the grave markers. Jez Lowe wrote the song from the point of view of a wife or sweetheart left at home wondering what happened to her loved one. I'm typing the lyrics from memory, so they may be a bit folk-processed... THE BERGEN (Jez Lowe) Sleep, why'd you wake me with these dreams you bring Dreams came to me where I lay, And deep the melody the wild waves sing, And my love is far, far away.
CHORUS
They heap their nets upon the decks by light
They reap the harvest of the cold, night sea
Steep waves rise above his cold, dark head,
It weeps with rain tonight where my love lies Sorry, don't know the chords; I learned it Acapaulco... Added to the Digital Tradition Oct 98. -JRO- |

Subject: RE: Lyrics The Bergen From: Charley Noble Date: 24 Feb 02 - 04:28 PM Great song. Never heard it sung better than by Jez, backed up by the Bad Pennies. |

Subject: RE: Lyrics The Bergen From: John Routledge Date: 24 Feb 02 - 06:39 PM Yes Charley, Jez's version is quite superb. However, even though I come from the same part of the world as Jez, I have to say that Linda Kelly and Noreen sing "Bergen" as a duet (unacommpanied) which is at least the equal of Jez's version. He didn't mind at all when I told him :0) Great Song. |

Subject: RE: Lyrics The Bergen From: Snuffy Date: 24 Feb 02 - 06:53 PM Note for Mmario: The Bergen is on your Missing Tunes list, and Noreen has recently acquired Noteworthy Composer. I've told her she has to sent you the notation, so keep chasing her till you you get it. BTW I have heard that the real ship was actually called the Berger, which would sound something like "Bairger" in Norwegian, burt a bit too close to "McDonalds" in English, so Jez changed the name to Bergen. Is this true? WassaiL! V |

Subject: RE: Lyrics The Bergen From: GUEST,Sandra Date: 25 Feb 02 - 07:57 AM Charley - (Margaret) Walters & (John) Warner also perform The Bergen on "Who was there?" Obviously Margaret didn't sing it when you were in Sydney. Incidently we have Jez & the Pennies at Almost Acoustic in April & Margaret will be support act - come back, or you'll be missing a fantastic night!! He asked for her & her (non-existant) band as support that night. So, several of the musicians who are playing on her upcoming album are joining her. She & John met Jez early or mid 90's when they toured England. If you send me your address, I'll send you some pictures if you can't make it. |

Subject: RE: Lyrics The Bergen From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Feb 02 - 08:45 AM Yes, it was actually The Berger. Jez Lowe says he changed it because he thought it'd give people the giggles.
A bit the way people tend to get a bit taken back with Leezie Lindsay, when it comes to the lines:
My name is Lord Ranald McDonald, I'm the chieftain of highest degree.

Subject: RE: Lyrics The Bergen From: Herga Kitty Date: 25 Feb 02 - 03:19 PM I got the words from a Gordon Bok album, "And so will we yet", sung by Ann Mayo Muir, in which it "leaps with herring in the hold for me" in verse 3, and his head is fair in verse 4. I learnt it by remembering it as the "eep" song, because of the rhyme at the beginnings of the lines as well as the ends! Kitty |

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: THE BERGEN (Jez Lowe) From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 26 Feb 02 - 12:00 AM Here be the chords, methinks. If you copy the following to your word processing program and use a monospaced font (like Courier New), it should align itself properly (he said, with all the confidence of the computer semi-literate).
The Bergen note: This song was written by Jez Lowe; he said that he saw a graveyard on the coast of Scotland or Northern England where the local people had buried the bodies of a Norwegian fishing boat that had gone down offshore in a storm. They didn't know the crewmen's names, so they put the name of the ship, The Bergen, on the grave markers. Subject: RE: Lyrics The Bergen From: Teribus Date: 26 Feb 02 - 06:36 AM The version of Leezie Lindsay I have heard most often has the line quoted above by Kevin as: "For my name is Donald ClanRanald, the chieftain of highest degree." The statement he makes refers to the ClanRanald being the senior sept of the clan Macdonald - who were Lords of the Isles whose allegiance lay with the King of Norway not to the Scottish Crown. |

Subject: RE: Lyrics The Bergen From: GUEST,Colin Campbell Date: 26 Feb 02 - 06:48 AM News to me that the McDonalds ever showed allegiance to anybody. |
|
Subject: RE: Lyrics The Bergen From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 26 Feb 02 - 08:28 AM Well the DT has Ranald MacDonald, and that's how it always seems to be sung when I've heard it. Donald ClanRanald might be a good idea though, especially if it's valid. I'll pass on the suggestion to a friend who sings it with MacDonald. |

Subject: RE: Lyrics The Bergen From: Raggytash Date: 26 Feb 02 - 02:17 PM Sitting here with the Jez Lowe songbook on my knee, he writes that "The Bergen was a ship from Finland wrecked off Tees Bay at the turn of the century, and whose crew lie buried in my local churchyard" He turns his guitar to DADGAD capo 3rd fret and uses the chords of D Bm G D/ G D Bm Em D G/ D Bm Em D G written in January 1986 |

Subject: RE: Lyrics The Bergen From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Feb 02 - 05:28 AM I'm starting to think it likely was the Bergen after all, but Jez saw the opening for a joke, which is why he always says it was the Berger. Someone find that gravestone and clear things up... |

Subject: RE: Lyrics The Bergen From: Susanne (skw) Date: 27 Feb 02 - 04:20 PM Raggy, is the songbook still available? What year did it come out? Also, I'd very much see this cleared up. It's bad enough, the stories that spring up around songs, even without the artist adding to them ... |
