The Csárdás Label
The Csárdás label is one of several associated with Don Gabor's Continental operation of the 1940's. The Csárdás is generally thought of as the national dance of Hungary. It is accompanied by a syncopated style of music often associated with Gypsy ensembles (Cigányzenekara). Gabor emigrated to the U.S. from Hungary in the 1930's and went to work for RCA Victor in the shipping department. In 1940 he started his own business, specializing in ethnic recordings. The highest Csárdás issue number reported is MR60.

Information coded in green is taken from Richard Spottswood's Ethnic Music on Record. Since most of his listings provide details of only one side of a disc it is likely that the flipsides are recordings whose paperwork is no longer in the Victor files or else from sources other than Victor. The actual discs in hand are in Continental album No. 4 titled "The Romance of the Continent" but the labels on the discs are all Csárdás. They have issue numbers prefixed MR but of the earlier recordings only the label of MR28 matches the numbers in the runout, which are in typical Victor font. These sides are intermingled non-consecutively with other, non-Victor mxs. in the album. Note that Hungarian usage places the family name first and that appears to be applied to these labels in the artist credit but not in the composer credit.

Vince Giordano at BMG has searched through the label files and adds:
We do have some Continental blue cards and at the end of the cards it sez "see also Csardas Records" But, there are no Csardas Records blue cards.....who knows what happened to them ?? !!
