Re: Your editorial "Accept nuclear waste" November 7, 2005
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is advocating the ultimate
permanent burial of irradiated nuclear fuel waste. It is an irresponsible
option and one which, if implemented, cannot be checked, as some of these
substances will remain dangerous to human health and the environment for
hundreds of thousands of years and countless generations to come.
The least we can do now is what is being advocated for many other kinds of
toxic waste materials; i.e., reduction at source. This can best be achieved if
the production of nuclear waste is eliminated through a systematic phase-out
of nuclear power, coupled with a major phased-in program of energy
conservation and renewable alternatives.

nuclear reactor in that province, November 19, 2005
The Honourable Lorne Calvert
Premier of Saskatchewan
Room 226, Legislative Building
Regina, Saskatchewan

Dear Mr. Premier,
It has been reported that you are considering a small nuclear reactor for
Saskatchewan. I think you should be aware of the significant problems
encountered back in the 1980's when the nuclear industry was attempting to
market its 10 megawatt "Slowpoke" reactor. If I am not mistaken, the
University of Saskatchewan was one of the places that wisely rejected the
"free" version of that reactor.
I don't know what size reactor or what type you are thinking about, but I
offer a personal perspective on a rather dismal earlier experience with a
small reactor. The link below takes you to the first two chapters of my
on-line "Great Canadian Nuclear Waste Saga."

I hope someone in your office reads this and calls it to your attention for
your information.
Sincerely,

Email to the Ontario Energy Minister on proposed expansion of nuclear energy,
December 15, 2005
December 15, 2005
Dear Minister,
We sincerely hope that the Ontario Government is not serious about the
development of additional nuclear energy in the province. As citizens of this
province we protest the further incursions of debt that would be the result of
such a move — we’re still paying off the debt load from the last Darlington
merry-go-round of nuclear, why burden us with more, unnecessarily?
However, if you insist upon pursuing this venture, your plans must be
subjected to full-scale, open and transparent public hearings so that all
sides of the issue can be aired. Ontario’s energy future is simply too
important to do any less.
Potential for even greater cost overruns and debt burdens, the inherent
unreliability and risks associated with nuclear reactors, the production of
even more nuclear waste, serious health, safety and security issues — all must
be subjected to a full airing in the public arena.
The alternatives to nuclear energy must be a major part of the discussion. As
many jurisdictions have discovered, a serious conservation effort can replace
large quantities of energy supply. Many cleaner and decentralized alternatives
are available throughout Ontario. There are plenty of examples around the
world for your Government to study.
We ask that you discard any notion of nuclear expansion now.
Ontario could catch up and become a clean-energy leader and in the process
could reap great economic benefits for all regions of the Province.
Sincerely,
Phyllis and Walter Robbins
