BURNT HORSE FLESH
From: B J McN. (Aka BeaJay, The Somber Sonneteer)
(The) BATTLE HYMN OF THE CHILDREN (sung to The Battle Hymn of The Republic)
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the burning of the school.
We have tortured all the teachers. We have broken every rule.
We broke into his office, and we tickled the principal.
Our troops are marching on.
Chorus: Glory, Glory, Hallelujah.
Teacher hit me with a ruler.
So, I bopped her on the bean
With a rotten tangerine,
And her teeth came marching out.
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the burning of the school.
We have tortured all the teachers. We have broken every rule.
We broke into his office, and we tickled the principal.
Our troops are marching on. CHOR.
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the end of the PTA.
My Pop can see my Mom now. She doesn't have to say,
"I'm sorry there's a meeting, Dear. I won't be home today."
Our Pops go marching on. CHOR.
Mine eyes have seen the glory of a brand new generation.
It will help to make the boys and girls the leaders of the nation.
"We'll perform an operation
On the Board of Education."
Our kids go marching on. CHOR.
_Note: From A Prairie Home Companion Folk Song Book, Marcia and John
Pankake, Viking Penguin, Inc., 1988: “This song was submitted with more
variations than any other. . .” (over 1800 songs were submitted to the radio
program’s “Department of Folk Song”) _
From: Marty H I'm looking for lyrics and titles to some songs my Grampa used
to sing.
BELLE WAS THE HIRED GIRL'S NAME
Belle was the hired girl's name. She tried the fire to light....
Oh where is blew Belle, I never did learn,
But I guess she went to heaven, Cuz she was too green to burn.
BILLY BOY
Q. From L.W.D. I remember listening to "Billy Boy" when I was a kid. Do you
know where I could get the music for it
Q2 from Dr Gil L. Also, do you know whether a recording of "Billie Boy" is
available?
_A. Lyrics and tune for Billy Boy can be found right on this very own
Grandfolkies' website , and on p.103 of our SILLY! Songbook._
BOWLEGGED MAN WITH A BOWLEGGED WIFE
Q From L: We are trying to remember the words to a particular song. What we
can remember is the tune and the following line: Have you ever, ever, ever
in your whole entire life seen a bowlegged man with a bowlegged wife
A1. (PR) Anybody out there know this one I vaguely remember that as a
"long-legged sailor. . ." skipping rope rhyme.
_A2 From super song-sleuth, Meredith C._, The second song (Bowlegged Man
With A Bowlegged Wife) is a camp-type song going:
Have you ever ever ever in your long legged life
Seen a long legged sailor with his long legged wife"
No I've never never never in my long legged life, etc....
Repeat with short-legged, crooked-legged, knock-kneed sailor, and on and on.
Well, thanks very much Meredith C.!
BUFFALO — From: Laura C. Hi, I am looking for the words to a song called
"Buffalo" I had a 78 rpm record with it on one side and on the flip side
was, "The Railroad Runs Through the Middle of the House." The chorus to
"Buffalo" went like this:
CHORUS: Buffalo, you said Buffalo,
So slowly I turned and I hit him and I bit him
And I rocked him and I socked him
And I knocked him to the floor.
With a bump and a clump, and a lump and a thump
I gave that guy what for.
And man when I was finished, he must have
known by then, to never, no never say Buffalo again.
If you can find the words for me, I will be very grateful! Thank you, Laura
C.
Anyone out there know this song?
From: Bill D: Hi Laura C., I remember Buffalo as a child (now 52) and part
of the song goes:
Oh I used to have a honeybun
And she was doin' fine
Until the day she told me that
She loved a friend of mine
I met the guy on Monday, and when I said hello
He said they were eloping on a train to Buffalo CHO
Hope that helps,
Bill D
BURNT HORSE FLESH
1 Q. from Jeff C: When I was a kid my mother had a hand written song book
which she used to sing from. One song she sang was a bout a little boy who
wore *pants his mother made for him. I just remember the phrase "in the
little pants my mother made for me" ( _see title on “I” page) _
Q.A second song I would like information on is one we had on a 78 that was
called "BURNT HORSE FLESH". Do you know anything about this song?
Any information you might be able to provide on these two songs would be
greatly appreciated.
thank you,
Jeff
2A. Here is a website that sheds light on a good example of “climax of
horrors” stories: “Folklorists have collected samples of what has come to be
called "The Climax of Horrors" dating well into the nineteenth century. In
1879, a version titled "How to Tell Bad News" appeared in McGuffey's Fifth
Eclectic Reader. But it's even older than that. . . a version was harvested
from an 1841 English miscellany, and one of our readers points out its
appearance as a French song dating back to at least the 1500s.”
